The Lancastria Association of Scotland created a war memorial for one day at the Scottish parliament yesterday by laying out 4,000 poppies, one for every person who died when HMT Lancastria was sunk in St Nazaire harbour on 17th June 1940.

The Lancastria Memorial is to be unveiled in a Service at 2.30.pm on Saturday, 1st October 2011 in the grounds of the Golden Jubilee Hospital Clydebank.
The Hospital stands on the site where the HMS Lancastria was built by Beardmore and Sons Shipbuilding yard in 1920, So it could not be more symbolic site for the memorial.

This is great news. It is such a shame that, due to the scale of the disaster, it was covered up by the " establishment " so as not to spoil the " Miracle of Dunkirk" story and news of France's capitulation to Germany.

No so, she was sunk at anchor in the Loire estuary a couple of miles or more offshore from St Nazaire. It is believed that the number lost may be nearer 6,000, no one really knows the exact number (estimates range from 4,000 up to 9,000.
The Lancastria Memorial at St Nazaire
"Opposite this place lies the wreck of the troopship Lancastria sunk by enemy action on 17 June 1940 whilst embarking British troops and civilians during the evacuation of France.
To the glory of God, in proud memory of more than 4,000 who died and in commemoration of the people of Saint Nazaire and surrounding districts who saved many lives, tended wounded and gave a Christian burial to victims.
We have not forgotten.
