Recently launched, this seems to be concentrating on 18th and 19th century newspapers for the moment.

http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/

There are some Scottish newspapers listed, and one, The Motherwell Times, seems to go up to 1924. However, I did a search for "casualties" and there didn't appear to be any results at all for between 1914 and 1920, so I think for some reason they haven't covered the First World War yet.

May be useful in the future, but for now probably only good for 19th century conflicts.

It's also not particularly cheap to view, although searching is free.

A resource for the future perhaps then.

I just wanted to update this thread because recently they have been adding lots of years for the Dundee Courier and Evening Telegraph. I've uploaded some strays I found in my own research, and will continue to do this where I can, but it would be worth using now for more focussed searches.

Current relevant holdings are:
Courier - complete for years 1914-1920. Also 1946 is complete now
Evening Telegraph - complete for 1939-1947

There is currently nothing for the early 1920s which is a pity as I know there will be lots of reports of unveilings etc. However the availabilty of both papers has massively increased over the last month or so, so let's hope it continues and covers that period too.

Also, the database is now available to anyone with a Findmypast subscription

I hada look at this on Findmypast, and it seems you can't browse editions. You can only search for a name, and hope the scanning has picked the name up correctly.

With my surname, you find a lot of the results are actually for people named McKay.

Yes like all OCR'd stuff sometimes it is more of a hindrance Smile

I really don't like the FMP search tool so renewed my main subscription even though the content is a duplication of my FMP one. I justify it based on convenience!

Recent additions include the Aberdeen Journal - currently only 1940s years would be useful here and the Sunday Post. This could be particualrly relevant as they are currently loading 1915 and 1917 and also years in the early 1920s.

I've found some great stuff in the Sunday Post for my own research

And just to update that the Courier and Evening Telegraph are both mostly complete from 1914 to the late 40s (some years missing)

Can spend forever and a day scanning pages in some newspapers for relevance and come up GH :-

This is a bit murky and lots of things cannot be done except in long hand.

Downland the info and it then can be read and printed off with a bit of cropping....

The Hamilton Advertiser is now being loaded on to this site. Currently 1915 to 1918 are complete so particularly relevant for this site. Have bookmarked some finds which may be of interest and will try to get time to upload.

loads of newspapers, including my local, are now covering the war years. Have a look and see if the papers you are after are now covered.

if you hurry there's a 1 month for £1 deal at present, so you can have a good look for little outlay.

use the promo code "Oct2014". please remember to unclick the "auto renew" box in "my account" then "edit details" after signing up though.

Cheers,
Derek.
