'''HMS ''Trollope'' (K575)''' was a British Captain class frigate of the Royal Navy in commission during World War II. Originally constructed as a United States Navy ''Buckley'' class destroyer escort, she served in the Royal Navy from January to July 1944.
The ship was laid down as the unnamed U.S. Navy destroyer escort '''DE-566''' by Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard, Inc., in Hingham, Massachusetts, on 29 September 1943 and launched on 20 November 1943. She was transferred to the United Kingdom upon completion on 10 January 1944.

Commissioned into service in the Royal Navy under the command of Lieutenant Commander Harry Westacott, RN, as the frigate HMS ''Trollope'' (K575) on 10 January 1944 simultaneously with her transfer, the ship served on patrol and escort duty in the English Channel and supported the invasion of Normandy.
On 6 July 1944, ''Trollope'' either ran aground near Arromanches-les-Bains, France, or was torpedoed by a German S-boat – known to the Allies as "E-boat" – motor torpedo boat off Cap d'Antifer, France, according to different sources.
''Trollope'' was declared a constructive total loss. The Royal Navy returned her to the U.S. Navy on 10 October 1944.
The U.S. Navy struck ''Trollope'' from its Naval Vessel Register on 13 November 1944. She was sold on 9 January 1947 to John Lee of Belfast, Northern Ireland, for scrapping, and was scrapped in Scotland in 1951.

DICKIE, WILLIAM AUSTIN
Rank: Surgeon Lieutenant
Date of Death: 14/10/1939
Age: 25
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy H M.S. Royal Oak
Panel Reference: Panel 33, Column 1.
Memorial: PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL
Additional Information: Son of James Austin Dickie and Mina Austin Dickie of Fulford, Yorkshire.
At 12.58am on 14 October 1939 German torpedoes struck HMS Royal Oak. The battleship sank quickly with the loss of more than 800 lives.
Today the wreck is a designated war grave and the waters above are a place of remembrance in Scapa Flow.
HMS Royal Oak was a Royal Navy battleship under Captain WH Benn. She had been moored off the cliffs of Gaitnip, in the north-east corner of Scapa Flow, so her anti-aircraft guns could help defend against any air attack on the vital Netherbutton Radar Station which stood above the cliffs.
On the night of 13/14 October 1939, German submarine U-47, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Günther Prien – one of the three recognised U-boat aces of World War II – crept into Scapa Flow through Kirk Sound, between the blockships which were meant to have made the Sound impassable to enemy vessels.
Royal Oak was sighted. U-47 fired three salvoes. The first landed a minor hit which the crew of the battleship mistook as a minor internal explosion, rather than a sign of attack. Despite the second salvo missing, the confusion surrounding the first hit gave Prien time to return to his original firing position, reload, and fire again. This third salvo delivered the fatal hits.
The ferocity of the explosions caused the ship to heel over alarmingly and she sank with frightening speed. Those men that managed to escape the initial explosions and ensuing fires were faced with a swim through chilling waters thick with oil. Few survived the half-mile swim to shore.
From the crew of more than 1,200, 834 were lost. Recent careful research has better-established the casualty list, 833 having been the figure commonly given in the past.
Captain Benn was one of the survivors and both he and his crew were credited with doing all they could to save their ship.

DUFF, ROBERT EWING
Rank: Lieutenant (E)
Date of Death: 24/02/1941
Age: 38
Regiment/Service: Royal Naval Reserve H.M.S. Manistee
Panel Reference: Panel 2, Column 1.

Completed in January 1921 as steam merchant Manistee for Elders & Fyffes Ltd, London. At 14.14 hours on 7 Jul, 1940, the unescorted Manistee was shelled by U-99 (Kretschmer) southwest of Ireland, after a G7e torpedo missed the ship at 14.01 hours. The ship returned fire from two guns and forced the U-boat to break off the attack. No hits were scored in the gun duel.
On 14 Sep, 1940, requisitioned by the Admiralty and commissioned in December 1940 as the ocean boarding vessel (OBV) HMS Manistee (F 104), armed with two 6in, one 12pdr and one AA guns.
At 22.42 hours on 23 Feb, 1941, U-107 fired a spread of two torpedoes at HMS Manistee (F 104) (Lt Cdr Eric Haydn Smith, RNR) south of Iceland and scored a hit in the engine room. The ship had escorted the convoy OB-288 until it was dispersed at 21.00 hours the same day. She was also attacked by the Italian submarine Bianchi (Giovannini), which fired a torpedo at 22.56 hours, claimed a hit in the stern from a distance of 600 metres and then continued to chase other ships of the convoy.
At 22.58 hours, U-107 fired two coups de grâce that missed because the ship suddenly continued. Also a stern torpedo fired at 23.42 hours missed because it was a surface-runner. The U-boat began a long chase of the zigzagging ship and fired two torpedoes at 07.58 hours on 24 February. One of them hit in the stern and caused the ship to sink in 58°55N/20°50W. HMS Churchill (I 45) (Cdr G.R. Cousins, RN) was ordered to search for survivors, but found none. The commander, 18 officers and 122 ratings were lost.
