BLACK WATCH
Moon, James. Pte.
(The Scotsman 29th Dec 1915)
"From wounded soldiers who have arrived back at Blairgowrie from the front some particulars have been gleaned regarding the death of Private James Moon, of the 1st Black Watch, who was the first Blairgowrie soldiers to be killed in the war. He took part in an action at Coulommiers on the day he joined the Battalion (10th September), and on Sunday 13th, the Black Watch arrived on the Aisne. the next day-the beggining of the great battle of the Aisne-the British troops were heavily engaged, and it was then that Private Moon fell. The Black Watch held an advanced position with little or no shelter, and they could see other regiments falling back. Private Moon momentarily stood up to get a better view of the situation, and when he was in the act of bending down to resume his position in the half dug trench he was hit in the forehead by a bullet, death being instantaneous."

I can't compete with David Gow's photograph but what I didn't notice in it is the vegetation around the stone wreath on this memorial. Here it is:
I hope something is done about this soon, it can't be doing the stonework any good.

Here are more images of the Carrick statue covering the angles we haven't got before
We've got the Carrick signature already but this one shows the detail of the boot and the nozzle of the SMLE
Note the loops on the back of the webbing belt

There are some interesting details on the top of the memorial. There are four badges. The detail is a bit fuzzy I'm sorry, the photos were taken on a phone. A good camera on a better day will hopefully provide sharper details.
I think this is the Scottish Horse
The Gordon Highlanders
The Black Watch
The Scottish Thistle

I didn't realise we didn't have photographs of the name panels or I would have snapped them. We should get these recorded.
