"Private Edward Curtis Murray Gray (2310), 1-9th Battallion (Highlanders) Royal Scots, died in an ambulance on April 24 while being removed to hospital wounded by a bullet shot received while his Company were engaged in a bayonet charge. Private Gray was a member of D Company, and six weeks ago had a trying experience, when a shell burst in the convent in which he and others were billeted, causing about fifty casualties, including nine fatalities. A piece of shell cut into his tunic and scratched his elbow. Private Gray, who was in the nineteenth year of his age, had chosen the medical profession as his career, and had entered for the summer classes at Edinburgh University previous to his enlisting. He was a native of Dalkeith."

"Lance Corporal John Linkston, 30 Bach (sic) Street, Dalkeith, was killed in action on April 23. Linkston, who was 25 years of age, had seen service in India and China, having enlisted in the 2nd Cameron Highlanders about seven years ago. He was the son of a Dalkeith Gardener and a native of Crammond."

Wiliam Nicol – age 34 – Private (14504107) Royal Army Ordnance Corps.
William had been a vanman with a butcher in Lockerbie in Dumfrieshire before becoming supervisor of abattoirs in the south of Scotland. He enlisted in 1942 and served in North Africa and in Italy where he was killed in an accident. (Source: D&G Standard 14/10/1944 p.4)
Born 1910 in Dalkeith, Midlothian. Son of James and Christina Nicol of Trin Mill, Dalkeith. Husband of Agnes Jane “Nancy” (Haining) Nicol of 18 Kintail Park, Lockerbie who he married in 1934 in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire and who he left a widow with five children.
Died on Active Service on 3 October 1944 and buried in Caserta War Cemetery, near Naples, Italy.
Also named on the Lockerbie War Memorial and on the Dryfesdale Parish Church memorial in Lockerbie.
The Royal Palace at Caserta served as headquarters for the Allied armies in Italy for the greater part of the duration of the Italian campaign and the 2nd General Hospital was at Caserta from December 1943 until September 1945.

Named on the Bowden Parish and Church War Memorials in Roxburghshire as:

THOMAS CATHIE A.S.C.
Thomas Cathie – age 37 – Private (M2/046610) Royal Army Service Corps.
In 1901 Thomas, aged 19, was a groom living at Upper Nisbet Farm, Crailing Roxburghshire. In 1911 he and his family were at Legerwood, Berwickshire and by 1914 they were living at Faughhill, Bowden where he was a chauffeur. He landed in France in May 1915 but after over four years of service he died of influenza/pneumonia in the Craigleith Military Hospital in Edinburgh.
Born 1881 in Haddington, East Lothian. Son of John and Mary (Ross) Cathie of Buccleuch Street, Dalkeith, Midlothian.
Husband of Margaret Frances or Fanny (Wilson) Cathie who he married in 1903 in Hoddom, Dumfriesshire.
Died on Service on 17 December 1918 and buried in Dalkeith New Cemetery, Midlothian. (CWG)

PTE. ALEXANDER BARRIE. Royal Scots
Alexander Brodie Barrie – age 20 – Private (330561) 1/8th (Pioneer) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Alexander joined his battalion in France as Private (5442) He was wounded in March 1918 and evacuated to the the Military Hospital at Woking, Guildford, Surrey where he died.
Born 1898 in Galashiels. Son of James and Catherine (Brodie) Barrie of 88 High Street, Dalkeith, Midlothian.
Died of Wounds on 2 May 1918 and buried in Dalkeith New Cemetery, (CWG)

Named on the Selkirk War Memorial and Roll of Honour as:

DODDS, WILLIAM, PRIVATE, ROYAL SCOTS, 1916-17.
William Dodds – age 30 – Private (41373) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
William was an insurance agent and he was living with his family at Thorburn's Buildings, Buccleuch Street in Dalkeith, Midlothian when he enlisted in December 1915. He was mobilised in June 1916 as Private (4180) in the 2/7th Royal Scots. He joined the 13th Battalion in France in February 1917 but he was killed two months later.
Born 1887 in Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland. Son of Alexander Dodds of 89 High Street, Dalkeith and of the late Agnes Dodds (died 1905).
Husband of Euphemia (Hume) Dodds of Burn Cottage, Mill Street, Selkirk who he married in 1912 in Selkirk.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1917 and buried in Windmill British Cemetery, Monchy-Le-Preux, France.

Named on the Channelkirk Parish War Memorial in Oxton Village, Berwickshire as:

GEORGE CRAWFORD, PTE. G.H.
George Crawford – age 33 – Private (8435) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
George was a coal miner in Dalkeith, Midlothian when he married in August 1912. He was at Carberry Colliery when he enlisted at the end of 1914 and he joined his battalion in France in March 1916.
Born 1883 in Oxton, Channelkirk. Son of the late George Crawford (died 1885) and of Margaret (Fairbairn) Crawford (from 1903 Mrs. Michael McGurn) Husband of Jane (Reid) Crawford who he married in 1912 in Dalkeith.
Killed in Action on 20 July 1916 and buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France.
