From www.uboat.net
At 20.59 hours on 24 Jul, 1943, the unescorted Fort Chilcotin (Master John Kerr), detached from convoy JT-2 two days earlier, was hit on the port side in the engine room by one of two G7e torpedoes from U-172 (Carl Emmermann) while steaming on a non-evasive course at 8.5 knots about 370 miles east-southeast of Bahia. The explosion stopped the engines immediately and killed four crew members on watch below. No distress signals could be sent as the aerials were carried away by debris. The surviving crew members and eleven gunners (the ship was armed with one 4in, one 12pdr, four 20mm and two machine guns) abandoned ship within 10 minutes when the ship quickly settled by the stern, but she then remained afloat because the engine room bulkheads held. The port aft lifeboat had been destroyed and the two forward boats were lowered too quickly and swamped, so the majority of the survivors abandoned ship in the starboard aft boat, which was also the motor boat and contained the emergency wireless set. Others jumped overboard and swam to four rafts that were cut adrift, while the master and about six men remained in the swamped port lifeboat. At 22.03 hours, the U-boat missed with a coup de grâce but a second fired six minutes later struck the Fort Chilcotin aft and caused her to sink immediately with her bow and stern rising out of the water due to a broken back. U-172 surfaced shortly afterwards and approached the motor boat, asking for a man to come aboard for questioning. The boatswain volunteered and told the Germans that the master and chief officer went down with the ship. He was asked where the ship was bound and if he had heard about the sinking of African Star, Harmonic and other ships, but gave only vague answers. After about 15 minutes, the boatswain was allowed to return to the lifeboat before the U-boat left and he later described the commander as very civil, who expressed his regret at having had to sink his ship and also wanted to hear his opinion regarding the outcome of war.

The survivors recovered the stores from the rafts and righted the two smaller boats, but with 38 men in the motor boat and 15 in one of the smaller boats they found that the other boat was not required and left it behind when setting sail in fine and clear weather at a speed of about 3 knots. They had plenty of food and water and sent distress signals from the emergency set each morning but received no replies. At 09.30 hours on 29 July, they were picked up by the Argentine steam tanker Tacito after attracting her by firing red flares when her lights were spotted at daybreak. The tanker also hoisted both lifeboats aboard and took them to Rio de Janeiro, arriving on the morning of 1 August.

McLUSKEY, JOHN
Rank: Sergeant
Service No: 1567157
Date of Death: 21/02/1945
Age: 22
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 358 Sqdn.
Grave Reference: 10. A. 5.
Cemetery: MAYNAMATI WAR CEMETERY

Sgt, RAF, 23 Cordiner Street, Glasgow, S.4 (Glw WW2 RoH)

No.358 Squadron was formed at Kolar, in India, on 8 November 1944, mainly from personnel of No.1673 Heavy Conversion Unit which had recently disbanded. Sixteen Liberators arrived during the month and crew training began. After moving to Digri in January 1945, the squadron flew its first bombing mission on 13 January, when eight aircraft bombed Mandalay. This however, proved to be the only bombing operation flown, as the squadron was then allotted to Special Duties. These consisted of dropping agents and supplies into enemy occupied territory, in the course of which long flights were undertaken. The fact that the first SD operation on 22 January lost three out of eleven aircraft illustrates the hazards of this type of mission when apart from the distances and weather problems involved, low altitude flights over enemy territory had to be made to locate dropping zones. Such flights continued until the end of the war. After the Japanese surrender, supplies were dropped to prisoner-of-war camps in Malaya, Sumatra and Java, until an airlift could be arranged to bring the occupants out to Allied bases. On 19 November 1945, the squadron was sent off for disbandment which took place officially two days later.

During German air raids on the night of 13-14 March 1941, a landmine dropped by parachute exploded on tenements between 8, 10, and 12 Dudley Drive, totally destroying them. Numbers 6 and 9 Dudley Drive were later demolished. Thirty-six people were killed and twenty-one injured, most of whom had been sheltering in the back closes. The grim task of digging through the rubble continued for many days.

HMS Welshman (Capt. William Howard Dennis Friedberger, DSO, RN) was returning from Malta to Alexandria when she was sunk about 35 nautical miles east-northeast off Tobruk, Libya in position 32º12'N, 24º52'E, by one torpedo from the German submarine U-617.
HMS Welshman supported the island of Malta during the long siege in WW2. The island population resisted strongly and was collectively awarded the highest decoration for civilian bravery. Welshman brought food and essential supplies many times; her role was featured in the UK movie The Malta Story. When unloading in Valetta harbour she was attacked and suffered a near miss which damaged her prop shafts, putting one of her three engines out of service. As her principal fighting strength was her extreme speed this damage affected her ability to perform drastically. She was also torpedoed subsequently, but made it home to the United Kingdom and was repaired at Devonport. She returned to the Mediterranean to serve on the same relief duty, steaming under disguise and simulating French warships.
Hit by U-boat
Sunk on 1 Feb 1943 by U-617 (Brandi).
