Easthouses War Memorial
Location: Memorial garden, Easthouses Road
OS Ref: NT 345 657
A hidden gem which is easy to miss. Situated within it's own sunken memorial garden there are some nice and unusual features on this little memorial. Note the small cross is actually on top of the cairn, and the Victory which is only a few inches high.
There are also two plaques concerning memorial trees.

This really is a very special memorial with some nice features.
It takes a bit of imagination but at around the time of the unveiling Easthouses couldn't have been the size it is now. It must have been a quiet rural backwater. _________________

There are a lot of post-45 houses in Easthouses and it now merging into Newtongrange. I take it the main employer in the early 20th Century would have been the coal mines.
Here is a transcription of the names. I've also identified the names.
1914-1918
ALLAN , Thomas Walker, Bombardier, Royal Field Artillery
BROWN , Robert Haig , Private , 1st Bn Scots Guards
CAMPBELL , Andrew, Private, 12th Bn Highland Light Infantry
GIBSON , Charles , Private , 1/4th Bn Seaforth Highlanders
KNIGHT , Thomas Moffat , Private , King's Own Scottish Borderers
SHAW , David, Gunner, Royal Field Artillery
SHAW , John, Private, 10th Bn Scottish Rifles
1939-1945
BURNETT , Peter , Lance Corporal , 2nd Bn Royal Scots
JACK, Robert L. Private, 4th Bn Seaforth Highlanders
MacKENZIE, Douglas, Guardsman, Scots Guards
FORD , Adam Aitken , Fusilier , 1st Bn Royal Fusiliers
LAW ,Charles Charmers Calder, Ordinary Telegraphist, H.M.S. Broadwater, Royal Navy
WEBSTER , John, Second Engineer Officer, S.S. Fort Babine, Merchant Navy

My Great Uncle Charlie Gibson is commemorated there, originally from Newtongrange he moved to Easthouses during the war, my G Grandfather Alexander Gibson was the pit manager at Easthouses.
Charlie was a surveyor with the Lothian Coal Company.
At one time the memorial was much more prominent than it is now, due to modern building, my G Granfathers house sat on the banking overlooking the memorial.
Charlie was the last man from the village to die in the war in October,1918 aged 19.
