Stirling Observer November 21st 1916
Talented Stirling Youth Killed
Pte “Willie” Mackieson, A&SH
Mr Joseph W Mackieson, hairdresser, 6 Barnton Street, has been officially notified of the death at the front of his only son, Willie who was a private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was only 21 years of age and, as in the case of many another gallant lad who has given his life for his country, the fact that he gave every promise of a successful career in civil life makes his sacrifice all the greater.
Writing to Mr Mackieson with regard to the death of his son, a Glasgow chum in the same battalion states that Willie was with a fatigue party carrying rations up to his company and that he was one of the two men killed instantaneously by the bursting of a high explosive shell. The writer, who is now in hospital, adds that Willie and he had long been chums and that he felt his loss very deeply.
Chaplain Frank W Stewart, in a letter to Mr Mackieson states: “The knowledge that your son died at his post of duty, faithful unto death, giving his life in the cause of righteousness and hastening the coming of peace, will, I know help to lighten a little the burden of your sorrow. Our trust and comfort in these dark days is in the promise of our Lord, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God”.
Private Mackieson joined the Commercial and Professional Battalion of the Argylls last November and was drafted out to France in July this year. He saw a good deal of fighting at the Somme and it was there that he met his death. Deceased served his apprenticeship with Messrs Crawford and Fraser, architects, Stirling, afterwards becoming under assistant to Mr Baker in the Art Department of the High School. He gained the Art Bursary (£25 for four years) at the Evening Continuation Classes and became a student at the Glasgow School of Art where he stepped from first to third form in six months. He was an enthusiastic member of the Boy Scouts and for his voluntary services rendered at Forthside AOD during his vacations was awarded the King’s War Scout Badge. As a vocalist, he appeared with success as an imitator of Harry Lauder at social entertainments in the town in times of peace and was very popular. A few weeks before his death, he sang some of his favourite Scotch songs in a French village.

Stirling Observer April 3rd 1917 (paraphrased)
Exhibition of the work of Willie Mackieson held in the Scout Hall in Princes Street, with a collection for comforts to be sent to his former battalion (15th A & SH); one of the original scouts of the Stirling 4th Troop; gained the war service badge; killed in his second action; gained 2nd prize at Scout exhibition in Edinburgh for 20 coloured drawings of wild flowers, 2nd for an etching of the Stirling Guildhall and 1st for a survey map of Stirling district; similar success in Birmingham.

Robert Merrilees does not appear on CWGC or SNWM, perhaps because he died after discharge. The church officials clearly felt he was a war casualty as he appears on the church memorial; he is also on the burgh memorial and the roll of honour but I expect the churches had an input in who appears there.
