Photos and notes from Sandra Muir ("columba")

St Columba’s Church is situated on Park Terrace, Stirling FK8 2NA.

The current building dates from 1902. The church was formed as a result of the Disruption of 1843 when 474 ministers walked out of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and joined the Free Church. The congregation built the Free North Church on Murray Place and then a “grander” building across the road, which later became the Baptist Church.
In 1900 the Free Church merged with the United Presbyterian Church to form the United Free Church hence the church became the North United Free Church. Also in 1900 there occurred the death of a member, Mrs Ellen Peter, who had difficulty in negotiating the steep stairs in the Murray Place church. She left a bequest to the North UF Church to build yet another place of worship to be called The Peter Memorial Church.
In 1929, the United Free Church re-united with the Church of Scotland and a decision was made to change the name of the congregation to St Columba’s. The full name now is:
St Columba’s Church of Scotland (worshipping in the Peter Memorial Building)
(From the centenary booklet of St Columba’s)

WW1 memorial
The Deacons’ Court of the church began discussions on a memorial in December 1918. A committee was set up and recommended that a bronze tablet be put up in the church with a list of the names of members and adherents of the congregation who had fallen in the war. The tablet was designed by Mr Campbell Mackie of Glasgow and the estimated cost was £132. 10/-. It was also decided to erect an iron grille with a bronze wreath in front of the radiator which was underneath the site of the proposed memorial; this was to cost £68. 10/-. Donations to defray the costs were sought from the members. The sculptors were Messrs HH Martyn and Co Ltd of London and Cheltenham.

The following inscription was agreed on:
“1914-1919 Remember with Thanksgiving the men of this Church who went forth for God and the Right. The names of those who returned not are here inscribed to be honoured for evermore.”

A Chum’s Tribute – What Private Balfour, Stirling, says
The following extract is from a letter written by Private John Balfour, son of Mr Walter Balfour, slater, Craigs, Stirling and who chummed the late Private Meiklejohn from the day they both left Canada with the Expeditionary Force. They belonged to the same regiment and after doing their training in England went to the front. Private Balfour writing to his parents in Stirling (his letter being received this (Tuesday) morning) says:
Poor fellow, he (Meiklejohn) passed away yesterday. We were both on sentry when it happened. He got hit on the head and fell back into my arms dead. I laid him down and knelt beside him and spoke but he was gone. We buried him behind the trench. Bob Wylie (son of J Wylie engine cleaner, 100 Upper Craigs) and some more of his comrades laid him to rest and put up a cross to mark the spot. I have written to his people and I hope God will sustain them in their great sorrow.

Stirling Observer Christmas Annual 1916
Men who have given their lives
Dr Neil M Gavin RAMC
Many in Stirling and district heard with regret of the death in France on 12th March of Dr Neil Gavin. Though frequently under fire, Lieutenant Gavin was not fated to meet the end that so many have done. From details to hand it appears that Dr Gavin, who was a younger brother to Bailie Hugh Gavin and Mr James Gavin, drapers, Stirling, was out riding when he met his death.

RAMC
Neil was educated at Stirling High School and at Edinburgh University, and after spending some years in business in Stirling, Glasgow and London, he joined the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society in 1898, and studied medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, qualifying as F.R.C.S. in 1901. He was then for some months Assistant in a country practice, and afterwards for some years in charge of a Medical Mission at Annand, India, under the Irish Presbyterian Church. On the outbreak of war, in response to an appeal made by the War Office for more medical men, he offered his services, and returned from India. He was gazetted Lieutenant in the R.A.M.C. He went to France in 1915, and was on active service very often in the front trenches, until he was accidentally killed near Bethune, France, by a fall from his horse.........Neil was the son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Gavin of Stirling, Draper; and was the husband of Maud Muriel Gavin [youngest daughter of Rev. W Fleming Stevenson, D.D., Dublin] of 35 Morton Hall Road, Edinburgh. They were married at Ahmedabad, Bombay Presidency, India, and had four children.
