Both Hood and Grant were checked out but did not progress due to lack of evidence, specifically they are not listed by GRO ( nor GROS) nor is there a service file.
It was not uncommon for a DC to be later cancelled, and may have happened in these cases. The basic record keeping of the Camerionians in particular, have been found lacking.

I am looking at them again and will update if more info is available.

I was in touch with Jim Grant regarding the situation with George A. C. Mackinlay. Unfortunately there was no official record of his death and the case could not be progressed. Full accounts and references to his death are given by the Glasgow University ROH and in the 'Young Barbarian' magazine for Perth Academy. I believe he is also on the Hillhead High School Memorial, Glasgow. This one has indeed been a mystery.

These two are now being progressed as a test case.

HILLHEAD HIGH SCHOOL WAR MEMORIAL VOLUME (Published 1921)
LIST OF FALLEN

G. A. C. MACKINLAY, M.A.,
Private, 5th Batt. The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) (T.). Killed in action, 15th August, 1917.

Biography

GEORGE A. C. MACKINLAY, M.A.
Private, 5th Batt. The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)

George A. C. Mackinlay, M.A., who was the eldest son of Mr George Mackinlay, 65 Bank Street, Hillhead, was killed in France on the 15th August, 1917. Educated at Hillhead High School, he proceeded to Glasgow University, where he graduated M.A., with honours in English Literature, Language, and History in 1912. In 1913 he was appointed English master in Perth Academy, which post he held till he joined the Army in 1914. It is no secret now to say that the headmaster was hoping to see him on the first available opportunity established as one of the English masters in his old school. He was at all times a keen sportsman, and entered fully into the athletic and social life of the School, both as a pupil and as a member of the Former Pupils' Club. An enthusiastic player of rugby, a leading member of the Literary Association, whose Magazine he founded and edited, he was one of the best and most widely known of the former pupils of the School. To those who knew him there is no need to praise him, but some things may be recalled in tribute to his memory. Among all those whom the School is proud to honour there was no truer gentleman than George Mackinlay. Clean-minded, generous-hearted as boy and man, he was never known to do a mean act or to take an ignoble view of life. A poet and a dreamer at heart, he took the best out of life, its beauty and its joy, and seemed to carry with him some of its sunshine. As a memorial of this gallant soldier and scholar a small volume of his poems have been published. This for his friends - but for himself - "He has outsored the shadow of our night".

Pte. G.A.C. Mackinlay 200909 is recorded in the Cameronians Roll of Honour as being killed on 15/10/1917 in France. However, if the Roll of Honour was incorrect as his place of death, could it be possible that he died of wounds back in the UK? This would mean his death may not be recorded in Scottish records but recorded in e.g. English records?

Just a thought.

No sign of his death in England.

I have had checks done for overseas deaths reported to England, he is not there.
This now suggests that he serverd as an alias, or that he actually survived.
the only prospect now for commemoration is that the Cameronians or family have records which confirm his death " officially ".
I cannot take it further

I don't think he served under an alias, I found his mic on ancestry, no mention of death though.

Hello,

There is a book of poetry, named "Poems", unfortunately not currently available on Amazon, by George A. C. MacKinlay.

Also found this link

MacKinlay, George A. C. (George Alexander Cheyne), 1890-1917: Poems / by George A.C. MacKinlay. (Glasgow : Lyon, 1919) (page images at HathiTrust; US access only)

Anyone have a contact in US who could access this? The book was published in 1919. Maybe an aside but, being positive, perhaps it would give more information or at least be another source of when he did die.

Further to the above, The Great War Forum has a post from 2005 - perhaps you have seen it already - which says the preface of the book gives G. A. C. M. dying at Ypres in August 1917, so, no need to do look up.

These things take time, had it not involved the Army it would still not be complete.
Hood has had to wait 97 years for the commemoration he was entitled to.
He is lucky that a recent change in process allowed us to present a test case in January ( along with Hood) which had a good prospect of being accepted.
