The wills of 26,000 Scottish soldiers who died in the First World War are to be made available online for the first time as part of centenary commemorations marking the outbreak of the conflict.

It would have been nice if they had said, when, where and if they would be free. Smile

They almost certainly won't be free.

I think this is it... I clicked on various things from the article on the BBC website, so I'm not really sure how I got there!!

A tad on the expensive side?

Just a shame they're not available through Scotland's People - a will from there is a fraction of that cost and there can be dozens and dozens of pages on it!

The National Records of Scotland have tweeted that they won't be available online until May.

£6 is probably ok for someone researching a single family member I guess but hardly a fair amount for someone researching a whole memorial. I would have liked to have seen it included in my not insubstantial Ancestry subscription.

The cost apart, these wills are not new in the public domain, they have been available for years.

True Jim, them going online and being easier to see is the real news story.

Edinburgh's not so bad for a day visit, but the cost of travel to TNA and accomodation in London is too much to justify for myself, and i imagine many others.

Lucky are those within a couple of hundred miles of London.

Derek.

Certainly true regards Kew.
These wills are in Edinburgh and those I have obtained over the years have been ordered from the comfort of my own home.
