The Bowling war memorial, a rustic pink granite cross with celtic wheelhead.
The memorial was erected by Glasgow monumental sculptors Messrs. Scott Rae, the daybook entry reads:
'Order No. 5537, Bowling, Red rustic cross, Erected July 1920, Daybook 164'.

It is National Fire Service but was only created in August 1941. AFS is Auxiliary Fire Service and was the former name of the NFS. Given the date of death he should be recorded as AFS.

F.A.P. will be First Aid Post.

Note the date 14th March 1941 which was the Clydebank Blitz

We have AFS on the abbrevations thread. I will add NFS

He is listed on the memorial at Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service HQ in Hamilton.
Do we have this memorial on the Project?
Can't seem to find it.

"Mr Dollans, 3 Red Row, Bowling, has been notified that his son, Private William Dollans, 1/9th A. and S.H. (T.F.) was killed in action on May 24. Private Dollans, who was 20 years of age, served three years in the Territorials, and was an apprentice blacksmith in Messrs Beardmore's Yard, Dalmuir, prior to the outbreak fo the war."

Some disagreement between following authorities of his rank - Driver or Gunner. SDGW have him enlisting at Ardrossan, Perthshire.

To avoid confusion, HMS Pembroke was the name given to the shore barracks at Chatham. Nine ships and a number of shore establishments of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Pembroke. Scroll down the following link for information about the air raid of 3rd September, 1917.

The bombing raid in which Stoker McLean was killed was reported in the Glasgow Herald issue Wednesday, 5th. September, page 7:- "193 Naval Men Killed and wounded in Monday's Raid"; "Residential Part of Naval Establishment Hit".
