Torphins - Kincardine & Deeside District
Torphins, Community , location - Kincardine O'Neil Hospital Grounds , UKNIWM Ref No. 8634
Torphins, Memorial Hospital , location - Kincardine O'Neil Hospital , UKNIWM Ref No. 8635

The Torphins war memorial is an elemental style monument featuring a large, roughly hewn grey granite standing stone which is flanked on either side by a low curving wall constructed of rough boulders of different shapes. The commemorations and names of the dead are listed on dressed grey granite panels set into the walls.
The memorial stands in its own rock garden enclosure at the Kincardine O'Neil War Memorial Hospital at the entrance on St. Marnan's Road.
The dedication reads:
'GREAT GRANITE STONE, SPEAK WHAT OUR LOVE ENROLS,
THE GLORIOUS PASSING OF HEROIC SOULS,
WE DO NOT NUMBER THEM AMONG THE DEAD,
THEY REST IN MANY FIELDS WHERE VALOUR BLED,
SERVING THE RIGHT, THEY FELL, YET STILL IN LIFE,
THEY SERVE THE GOD OF RIGHT BEYOND THE STRIFE.

This memorial sits at the entrance to the former hospital which was part of the war memorial fund raising for Torphins.

Confusingly this hospital was knows as the Kincardine O'Neil War Memorial Hospital although it isn't in the village of Kincardine O'Neil and also the Torphins War Memorial Materinty Hospital.

It is now closed as a hospital and is used as a GP medical practice called the Torphins Health & Resource Centre

It can be seen on Google Maps Street View

It would be good to get a photograph of the hospital building as well as the memorial.

1914 Parish of Kincardine O'Neil 1919
War Memorial Hospital

The main door to the former War Memorial Hospital was retained but converted into a window.

A better pic could be obtained with a passing visit. I doubt if there would be anything still within the building but you never know.

Of these, nearly 300 belonged to the Australian Army and over 150 to the Royal Australian Air Force; they lost their lives in Ambonia, in other islands of the Molucca group and in Celebes. Many of those commemorated here died in the defence of Ambonia in the early months of the war against Japan and others were killed in the Allied assault on Japanese air bases established on Ambonia and Celebes. A large number perished in Japanese prisoner of war camps. CWGC
