I found the following article but see no mention of the memorial either here or on the war graves site (although I note that gourdongirl was in the process of photographing/documenting Piershill Cemetery);

EVENING TELEGRAPH: 08.03.1920

MEMORIAL TO JEWISH SOLDIERS

In Piershill Cemetery, Portobello, before a gathering of 2500 persons, Colonel Sir George M'Crae, unveiled a memorial to 19 Jewish soldiers who had given their lives in the Great War.
Dr Salis Gaiches, Graham Street Synagogue, Edinburgh, one of the principal rabbis of Great Britain, presided, and was assisted in the reading of the Scriptures - in Hebew and in English - by the Rev. Mr Levinson and the Rev. Mr Titelmens. The service was very impressive, ending as is did with the Mourners' Prayer and the sounding of the Last Post.
In the course of an address Sir George M'Crae said 550, 000 Jews had served in the Forces in Great Britain, 250 Edinburgh Jews had joined the Army, 19 had made the supreme sacrifice, and one had been awarded the V.C.

MagsD.

The Link above says there is a Second World War plaque too, do you have a list of the names for them?

Thanks

That's great, many thanks for the update. Hopefully the other three men can be identified too at some point.

Kind regards

The Scottish National War Memorial records this sailor

Surname: KLEINBERG
Forename: Jack
Rank: Able Seaman
Place of birth: Glasgow
Date of death: 28 March 1942
Theatre of death: Unknown
SNWM roll: MERCHANT NAVY & FISHING FLEETS (Part 1)
Unit attached to MERCHANT NAVY & FISHING FLEETS
Other detail S.S. "RACELAND"

The "Raceland" was lost on convoy PQ13 to Murmansk.

http://www.ss-raceland.com/indexEnglish.html

From the website above:

On the 21st of march 1942, convoy PQ13 left Iceland. On the 28th of march the SS Raceland was north of Norway and had lost contact with the convoy due to heavy weather and equipment malfunction. That day, the German bombers attacked the ship, and finally the ship was sunk by a bom exploded nearby. The crew could save themself because of the calm sea, and took place in the 4 lifeboats. A day later a storm and a freezing cold caused 2 lifeboats to sink with 12 crewmembers on board. (the 12 crewmembers drowned)
The other two lifeboats reached land, and due to the suffering only 13 crembers of the 33 survived

When I look up the CWGC database I can only see one record for a sailor from the Raceland - Mess Boy Roy Currie from Canada.

I think this may be a case of a non-commemoration. I will continue that discussion in the Non-Comm section

Hello Adam,

Had a look at the Roll of Honour for R.A.C. Only one M. Lucas and he was a 2ndLt. However, he was born in Edinburgh and residence is given as Edinburgh.
Name: Maurice Lucas
Given Initials: B
Rank: Second Lieutenant
Death Date: 17 Jul 1941
Number: 117564
Birth Place: Edinburgh
Residence: Edinburgh
Regiment at Enlistment: County of London Yeomanry (Westminster Dragoons) RAC
Branch at Enlistment: Royal Armoured Corps
Theatre of War: Middle East
Regiment at Death: Royal Tank Regiment RAC
Branch at Death: Royal Armoured Corps

This soldier attended George watson's and there's a bio.
http://www.gwc.org.uk/our-school/history-of-george-watsons-college/watsons-war-records/

Wonder if his rank on memorial could be wrong? Any thoughts?

He must be a possibility given the name, regiment and Edinburgh connection. He was a pre-war territorial so perhaps he was a sergeant before being commissioned? It's a bit tenuous but it's certainly a good place starting place for further investigation.

Hello,

Had a quick look at scotlandspeople. There are a number of deaths where Poliwansky has the alternative surname Polli. CWGC has a Polli. Age is 34 and memorial is 37, however correct corps.

POLLI, SIMON

Rank: Private
Service No: 7680226
Date of Death: Between 06/12/1942 and 07/12/1942
Age: 34
Regiment/Service:Royal Army Pay Corps
Panel ReferencePanel 20. Column 1.
Memorial: BROOKWOOD MEMORIAL

Additional Information:
Son of Jacob and Sarah Polli; husband of Peggy Polli, of West Kensington, London.

Mags

Note: This is definitely the correct soldier. Found an engagement notice in The Jewish Chronicle, 26 Sept. 1941: Mr Simon Polli (Poliwansky), youngest son of Mrs Poliwansky and the late Mr Poliwansky of 80 South Clerk Street, Edinburgh. The engagement is to Peggy Benjamin.

He must be a possibility, there are often discrepancies with ages on memorials.

What a great piece of research to find him. With that information it will hopefully be easier to confirm or discount him as the man listed.

Kind regards

Here are photographs of the memorial. It was refurbished in 1982, it could do with some tlc now because a lot of the lettering is not clear. Thankfully MagsD has given us a transcription

Hello Jim,

I found his death cert on scotlandspeople: GROS 1919 Deaths 685/05 0458
He died at home, 8 Henry Street, Leith, on 16 May 1919, age 34. Cause of death was given as Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Laryngeal Tuberculosis. Sister, Lena, was the informant.
His service record(ancestry) shows he had spells in hospital with a note, "Malaria case, not available for a Theatre of War where malaria is prevalent, Salonika 9/06/1918". Time was also spent at the Malaria Centre at Berwick upon Tweed. After being admitted to the hospital at Edinburgh Castle, he was discharged as "permanently unfit for war, 100% degree of disability" on 18 February 1919. Also says he was eligible for SWB, however there is no record - perhaps he was too poorly to apply, he died a couple of months later.
