"Bert" Yarnall was a footballer born in Pontefract circa 1888. He came north to Scotland in season 1916/17 where he was the Scottish league top goalscorer with 39 goals in 33 matchs for Airdrieonians. He spent half of the following season at Airdrie as well before moving on to Clydebank and Dumbarton. I am struggling to find any further details of Yarnall and am unable to trace him after this. I would think his move to Clydebank/dumbarton was connected to some form of "government work", perhaps in the shipyards. Can anyone shed any light on this mystery?

Not too much detail but The Scottish Statutory Records have a marriage in Glasgow on 4 August 1916 between Herbert George Yarnall aged 23 : tubeworker (Private 3/1st. Shropshire Yeomanry) who lived at 16 Station Road, Coatdyke, Coatbridge to Jane Dawson of City Road, Chester.
There is a birth of Gladys Vera Yarnall in 1919 in Coatbridge.

That sounds like the man I am after, thanks for the details. Can anyone shed any light on what a tubeworker's job actually involved? I would assume that Yarnall headed back down south after the conflict was over.

A Herbert George Yarnall was born in the December Quarter of 1892 at Goole, West Yorkshire. That would align with his age (23) on the marriage register found by Douglas, but not with your date of c.1888.
A Herbert G Yarnall died in the December Q 1943, aged 50, at Oswestry, Shropshire (and not that far from Chester) Again the age "fits".

Thanks for that Ken. The circa 1888 birth year was taken from a book published a few years ago. Everything about the 1892 born players seems to fit in nicely: full name Herbert George Yarnall, was married in Coatbridge, just a short journey from Airdrie where he played football. Yarnall was top goalscorer in world league football in season 1916/17, so this helps to uncover a little bit of the mystery.
