When checking info I looked at the Occ: Moulder and in the 1901 Census he's a Moulder App. Which made me think he was the same man. _________________ Researching WWI info from Aberdeenshire, Banffshire, Kincardineshire & Morayshire. |

It now looks as if Pirie Alexander A/sjt S/15351 was formerly 8946, but cannot prove it 100%. _________________ Jim

Derek
The commission was never promulgated and so the rank of Sgt. is correct. _________________ Jim

He is mentioned above and also much earlier in this thread.
The Glasgow Herald, Wednesday, 29th. November, 1916.
"Deaths on Service.
BOWMAN.- Killed in action, 13th November, Private Herbert Maxwell Bowman, Gordon Highlanders, aged 21 years, younger son of Mr and Mrs Jas. Bowman, Glasgow, late of Huntly." _________________ Andrew. |

The Glasgow Herald, Thursday, January 3rd., 1918.
"Deaths on Service.
BARCLAY.- Killed in action on 8th. November, Lance Corporal John Robertson Lawson Barclay, H.L.I., late of Anchor Lane and Huntly."
(Anchor Lane, in Glasgow, runs between West George Street and St. Vincent Place.)
CWGC have only the briefest of details of this soldier - no Christian name, only his first initial, no age...... John's parents both pre-deceased him. He is noted on their headstone in Huntly Cemetery thus:- "Erected by DUNCAN and CHRISTINA BARCLAY in loving memory of their daughter LOUISA .........
The above CHRISTINA McLAREN or BARCLAY who died 19th September 1896 aged 41 years
Also the above DUNCAN BARCLAY who died 11th April 1910 aged 58 years
And of their son L/C JOHN R. L. BARCLAY who fell in action in Palestine 8th November 1917 aged 26 years ....." The family headstone in Huntly Cemetery has been photographed by the War Graves Photographic Project some time ago.
A total of 46 Highland Light Infantry casualties who fell on 8th November, 1917, are buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine. They are buried together having taken part in the Third and final battle for Gaza, which fell into Allied hands on 7th. November, 1917 as the Turks were driven out.
..............................................................
Regarding Private Herbert Maxwell Bowman, Gordon Highlanders, as noted a couple of posts above, his parents are buried Dunbennan Kirkyard, by Huntly, with a mention of him on that headstone.
Herbert's father was the first Provost of Huntly. _________________ Andrew. |
