"Four out of 17 members of the Edinburgh City Police who were reservists and rejoined the colours in August have given up their lives for their country. Two were killed on the field of battle and two have died of wounds. The second of the latter is Constable Alexander Shaw, who joined the force in June last, he was 24 years of age and had served 6 years in the Seaforth Highlanders, and he was at the front with the 1st battalion when he received a shrapnel wound in the thigh. He was brought to the general hospital at Manchester, and was progressing favourably, but gangrene supervened and he died on Sunday. He was a native of Galashiels, and has left a widow and child."

He is named on the Galashiels War Memorial as:
PTE. ALEXANDER SHAW. Seaforths
Alexander Shaw – age 24 – Private (9510) 2nd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
Alexander was a farm servant when he enlisted in September 1906. He served with the 1st Seaforths for 6 years, including on the North-West frontier of India, and was a reservist when he joined “B” Division of Edinburgh City Police in June 1914. He was mobilised in August and, since the 1st Battalion were still in India, he landed with the 2nd Seaforths at Boulogne on 23 August. Alexander was wounded and evacuated to the 2nd Western General Hospital in Manchester where he died.
Born 1890 in Galashiels [Ladhope] as Alexander Gilchrist Shaw. Son of Agnes Shaw. Husband of Christina McKenzie (Stewart) Shaw of 111, Fountain Bridge, Edinburgh.
Died of Wounds on 20 December 1914 and buried in Manchester Southern Cemetery.
