This memorial commemorates 5 members of the 1st Coatbridge Scouts who gave their lives in WW2. Originally the memorial was in the Scout Hall in Whifflet, Coatbridge which was demolished in 1960’s. A new hall was built in Bute Street, Coatbridge and the memorial was relocated there.

The 1st Coatbridge unit disbanded and 2nd Coatbridge Scouts formed and they now use the hall and care for the memorial.

My thanks to Ian R. Grant from New Zealand for the information and Mark Furmage, Scout Leader, for allowing access to the hall.

There is no rank or unit listed so perhaps he was a civilian casualty?

If it is him then the man born in 1904 can't be the same one, according to this webpage:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=56461096

Edward John Fitzpatrick
Note: Civilian War Dead; a.k.a. MITCHELL, ALEXANDER. Firewatcher. Son of the late Annie Fitzpatrick; husband of Ellen Fitzpatrick, of 77 Gorbals Street. Injured 7 March 1942, at Whitelaw's, Commerce Street; died at Royal Infirmary. Age: 62

That would make this Alexander Mitchell aka Edward Fitzpatrick's date of birth around 1880
