Researching:-
COWIE, ANNIE REBECCA
Rank: Civilian
Date of Death: 23/12/1941
Regiment/Service: Civilian War Dead
Reporting Authority CHINA
Additional Information:
at Nan Chik Tye, Peking.

Further research suggests that she was born in 1883, home address 9 Ashgrove Road, Aberdeen. We also know that she was a nurse serving in China whether as a Missionary nurse, Crown Agents Nurse, Chinese Red Cross Nurse or other organisation is unknown. In 1923 she returned to UK whether on leave or other business but returned to China in September 1925 with three other nurses.

CWGC quote died “at” Nan Chick Tye, Peking (Beijing), after an extensive search I could find no Town, Hospital or Cemetery named Nan Chik Tye.

Would any member have knowledge of a Memorial, press report or any other details that may add further to the sparse details that we have.

Grateful for any assistance.
Tony

Tony

From the Consular Records via Scotlands People : -

Occupation : Hospital Nurse Born at Rothie Norman Aberdeenshire on 30/1/1882

Thanks Douglas

At least that corrects some of our details. One has to assume that is a private address will now try for a hospital in the Nan Ch'ih Tzu (or Tzee) area of Peking. Pity that we can't fined an interested contact in China.

Well done!

Tony

This should be Rothienorman. Aberdenshire.

The details and spellings will be those provided to CWGC by the Reporting Authority involved ie. China

This Wikipedia page on Chinese Postal Map Romanization may be of use.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Postal_Map_Romanization

e.g. "Chi, ch'i, and hsi (pinyin ji, qi, and xi) are represented as either tsi, tsi, and si or ki, ki, and hi depending on historic pronunciation"

But what be of most use is one of the references:

China postal album: showing the postal establishments and postal routes in each province. 3rd ed. Nanking: Directorate General of Posts, 1936

Now all you have to do is work out where to find a copy!

Thanks

Adam
