Hello to everyone,

Thanks to David for helping me to register for this forum. My interest at the moment is mainly World War One. In fact, I am currently writing a book titled "World War One and Scottish Football", which will be a season by season review of the 5 wartime seasons in Scottish Football (Statistical and written), and a short biography of each player that made the ultimate sacrifice during the conflict. At the moment I have a list with 127 footballers. The criteria I have set is that anyone on the list must have made at least one appearance in the Scottish League, an International player or played in the English League/Southern League. My most up to date listing of players in on my blog at: www.scottishfootballhistory.wordpress.com. Any additions, corrections or otherwise are most welcome!

Also I have just watched the trailer for the new Jeremy Paxman documentary on WW1. It is to begin on BBC on 27th January at 9pm. Should be of interest to most people on here.

I have come across a few footballers in my research of Denny & Dunipace, but as most of them played for 'Juniors', I doubt if any would be of interest!

Hi Alan and welcome.
One to add to your list is George Huntly Badenoch. Born in Castle Douglas, he played for Hearts before moving south to play for (amongst others) Tottenham Hotspur and Northampton Town.

While at Northampton he met and married his wife and eventually joined the rest of his family who had moved to Canada. While visiting his in-laws in 1914 he enlisted in the Canadian Infantry at their base in England.

Oddly he is not listed on the Castle Douglas War Memorial but he is mentioned in a newspaper report on the Castle Douglas High School Roll of Honour at http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=5333

Thanks for the welcome and to everyone that has given any advice/additions so far. I had no mention of George Badenoch so thanks for that. I already had Thomas Clifford on my list, though he is not mentioned as dying during WW1 on some sources I have looked at.

I helped research the players and others connected with the team. It was hard to find info at the club as a fire destroyed their records.

"Mrs McGregor, 29 Cowlairs Avenue, Springburn, has received no word from her son, Private Alex. McGregor, of the 1st Gordon Highlanders, since December 14. Private McGregor is well known as a football player, having played at centre forward for Yoker Athletic last season. He subsequently signed for Totenham Hotspur, to whom he went in August last. He, however, returned to Scotland, and enlited in the Gordon Highlanders in November. After a stay in Aberdeen he left fo the front on December 3."

Brechin City FC have info about footballers from the club or footballers with a connection to Brechin who served or died in the war. There's quite a bit of detail about their employment before the war, rank, regiment and war service.

Had a look at your blog-any chance that you could list the clubs they played for?-that would help in relation to local club searches.
I presume that you have already been through the Internationals Book list.

It mentions numbers from some clubs and lists names from Celtic some of which you have not got.
Sure there was information recently in local paper re Raith Rovers which I will dig out.
