Not sure which thread to post this one on so happy for the Mods to move it if necessary.
In Monreith Churchyard there is a headstone enscribed, "In memory of Philip Lawton Hinds Archer who lost his life on SS Burutu on October 3rd 1918 aged 51 years". I have checked and some of those lost on the SS Burutu are commemorated on CWGC but not this man. However he looks more like a Civil Servant (and thus a passenger) rather than a member of the services or merchant marine. He was born 5 October 1866 at Saint Peter, Barbados and, prior to his death, was Controller of Customs at the Gold Coast Colony. In June 1918 he was appointed the Imperial service Order as a member of the Colonial Civil Service. |

Mike
From your info Archer is a civilian and therefor cannot qualify for commemoration by CWGC.
The vesel was lost consequent to a collision at sea with another vessel. _________________ Jim

Thanks Jim,
I thought the civilian status would be the clincher. A quick Google reveals names of others on the Burutu and these (crew) were recorded on CWGC. The Burutu was sailing without lights in a convoy when it was struck by another ship.
