John Kennedy

Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) attd. 7th Bn. Border Regiment
Panel Reference: Bay 6.
Memorial: ARRAS MEMORIAL

He was a teacher at Govan High School; the only one from the school to be killed in the war.
Listed on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour and on Jordanhill Teacher Training College Memorial (1906)

From Govan Press 11/5/18

“Govan Teacher killed: Second Lieutenant John Kennedy

To the steadily growing list of local men who have given their lives for their country has to be added the name of Second Lieutenant John Kennedy MA formerly a teacher in Govan High School. Mr Kennedy obtained his commission in the Scottish Rifles four months ago but at the time of his death was attached to the Border Regiment. He had been about three months in France. His loss will be keenly felt by his colleagues and former pupils for he was a skilful and enthusiastic teacher and never tired of his efforts to develop his scholars along the lines of their own varied personalities.
Of the twelve members of Govan High School staff on active service, four have been wounded, but Mr Kennedy is the first to make the supreme sacrifice. He hated war but saw it as the cure for German glorification of militarism, so he went forth to do his best. Mr Kennedy was 29 years of age. The sympathies of all concerned will go to his mother and young widow. “

Daniel Kerr
Rank: Serjeant
Service No: 240390
Date of Death: 25/03/1918
Regiment/Service: Highland Light Infantry 12th Bn.
Panel Reference: Panel 72.
Memorial: POZIERES MEMORIAL
Additional Information:
Born Glasgow. (SNWM) Resident at “Briarbank” 29 Mossgiel Road, Glasgow. (Glasgow RoH)
Listed on the Glasgow University Roll of Honour [listed as Student] and on Jordanhill Teacher Training College Memorial (1908)
Date of Birth 15th December 1888, teacher at Kent Road & Strathclyde Schools, Glasgow (DED 8/11/1/1-7).

DuRuvigny's RoH
Kerr, Daniel Sgt. No 240390 12th (Service) Bn. The Highland Light Infantry; son of Daniel Kerr of Winningmore, Maitland Avenue, Langside, Glasgow, Grocer and Provision Merchant, by his wife Elizabeth P., dau. of James Robertson of Glasgow Clothier; and brother to L/Cpl William Kerr; born Glasgow 15 Dec. 1888; educ. Shawlands Academy; Bellahouston Academy and Glasgow University; was a School Teacher; joined the 2/6th (Territorial) Bn. The Highland Light Infantry 5 Aug. 1914, as a Private, being promoted to Company Sergeant Major in Oct. 1915; trained at Dunfermline, Maldon and the Curragh Camp near Dublin; forfeited his rank and went out to France as Sergt. In Nov. 1917, being drafted into the 17th Bn. of his regiment, which was subsequently disbanded and then joined the 12th Bn. He was killed in action in Maricourt Wood near Montauban 25 March 1918. Buried at the side of the railway station of Montauban. Captain Hamilton on hearing of his death wrote, “From 1914 till 1916 I commanded the Company in which your son served whilst with the 2/6th Highland Light Infantry. Sergeant D. Kerr came to me , I think, as L/Cpl. but my opinion of him was such that in a very few months I had made him my Company Sergeant Major. I can honestly say that I have never had the pleasure to meet a more upright and through and through white man, and I can feel in some small degree how dreadful the loss to you must be,” and Lieut. Stewart; “He was killed in action as his company was advancing to the attack and died fighting with great spirit. He was a fine N.C.O. and always showed a fine example to his men. He is a great loss to his company and battalion.”

His brother
Kerr, William - Lance-Corporal No. 40695 10/11th (Service) Bn. The Highland Light Infantry son of Daniel Kerr of Winningmore, Maitland Avenue, Langside, Glasgow, Grocer and Provision Merchant, by his wife Elizabeth P., dau. of James Robertson of Glasgow Clothier; and brother to Sergeant D. Kerr; born Glasgow 4 Nov. 1890; educ. Shawlands Academy, Glasgow; was a partner in his father’s business at Shawlands, Glasgow; joined the 2/6th Highland Light Infantry under his brother C.S.M. D. Kerr in Nov. 1915; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from Aug. 1916 being drafted to the 10/11th Bn. Highland Light Infantry; was wounded near Arras in July 1917 when he would have received promotion for his bravery but that his Captain died before he could report; was reported missing after the fighting at Mory, near Bullecourt 22 March 1918 and subsequently unofficially reported killed in action on that date. Captain Hamilton stated that he had formed a very high opinion of him as a soldier and Captain Christie, under whom he fought wrote, “Your son was a splendid soldier.” In a letter to his mother Quartermaster Elliot says of him, “Whilst he was with us his example was worth much; always cheerful, always willing and always clean in conduct and language, his silent example under trying conditions often shamed those who should have known better.”
