Stirling, Gardener, by his wife Margaret, dau. of William Bisset; born Eastwood Park, Co. Renfrew 9 Feb. 1888; educ. Higher Grade School, Grangemouth, where he gained the Dux Medal and Glasgow University where he graduated M.A. in 1912 and was subsequently employed as a teacher under the Glasgow School Board at the Milton Street Public School; enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders in Sept. 1914 after the outbreak of war, quickly obtaining the rank of Sergt.; went to France 4 July 1915 and died in the General Hospital at Le Treport 1 Oct following from wounds received in action at the Battle of Loos 25 Sept. Buried in the British Soldiers’ Cemetery, Le Treport.

Matthew's MC award is at London Gazette 11/1/1916 p.583
He is indexed as Matthew Craig Fitch in this instance and as that he appears on the Glasgow Uni. RoH.
He's shown as being in the Reserve of Officers serving with the East Lancashire Regt.

F.), son of George Ford of 11 Duddingston Crescent, Portobello, Assistant Secretary of Inland Revenue and Registrar of Estate Duties, Scotland; and brother to Private C.H. Ford (qv); born Edinburgh 1878; educ. Watson’s College, Edinburgh and Edinburgh University where he won the Spence Bursary in 1898 and graduated M.A. with honours in Classics in 1902; subsequently went to La Chatelaine, the International College, near Geneva as English and Classical Master, remaining there until 1909 when he returned with the degree L. es L. to take up the post of French Master in Glasgow High School and when war broke out was busy preparing his thesis for the degree of Ph.D. Geneva; joined the 4th Royal Scots in Nov. 1914; trained at Edinburgh and Larbert; served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary force at the Dardanelles from May 1915 and was killed in action 28 June following being shot while going out to succour a wounded comrade after the charge of the Royal Scots on Gully Ravine. He was a keen sportsman and was prominently associated with cricket and running, winning many successes; his first in the quarter-mile, open to all schools at Stewarts’ Games in 1893; his second in the quarter at the at the International University Sports, Aberdeen in 1893; his first against Downer in the Powderhall open 200 yards handicap in 1900 and his victory in the Mixed Doubles at Liberton lawn Tennis Tournament in 1914.

Captain James Glen was the second son of the late Mr John Glen and Jane E. Glen of 14 Hillington Gardens, Cardonald, Glasgow. Captain Glen was a Teacher in Lambhill Street School when on the 16th September 1914 he enlisted in the 17th HLI. After training at Troon he went to France in November 1915. On the 4th August he was gazetted to the 5th Scottish Rifles, but on returning to France was attached to the 2nd Scottish Rifles. In July 1917, for gallantry, he was transferred to the Royal Air Force, where he qualified first as Observer and then as Pilot Scout. On the 1st July 1918 he crossed to France and was attached to the 70th Squadron RAF. He went on patrol to attack enemy balloons on the 16th of September and failed to return. (Bellahouston Academy War Memorial RoH)

He enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders on December 9 last and was drafted to the front seven weeks ago. He was educated at Calderhead (Shotts) and Glasgow High School and graduated at Glasgow University. Previous to enlisting he was teaching at Mathieson Street School, Glasgow.
