UKNIWM Ref: 44457

Location: Outside the Sheriff Court on Lewis Street, Stranraer. OS Map Ref: NX 060 606.

The name under other conflicts is not clear from the photos but it reads:
T G HILL

Lovely statue, unfortunately there are no visible foundry or other marks. UKNIWM does not give the sculptor either.

I would have known Colour Sergeant Shingleston as I had been his pay clerk a few years previous to his death but I confess I don’t now recall him. He was killed in Northern Ireland and is also commemorated at
http://www.palacebarracksmemorialgarden.org/Kings%20Own%20Scottish%20Borderers.htm

Private Hill died in Korea and is also commemorated at

It is a lovely statue, I've seen similar but none quite the same.

Have you any idea what the cap badge is meant to represent?

I leave the cap badge for others to judge, but could it be fusiliers?

This is the best I could get from the photos I took - you should be able to zoom it in a bit.

I like the dimple in the chin by the way, nice touch.

I agree It's a very impressive statue. The badge looks like the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

I thought Stranraer was in KOSB recruiting territory but here's why the statue wears a R.S.F. Tam O'Shanter:

From this http://www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk/5thkosb/territorial.html

5th KOSB

The 5th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers (Territorial Force) was established on 1st April 1908 by the amalgamation of the 3rd (Dumfries) Volunteer Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers and the Galloway (Kirkcudbright and Wigtown) Volunteer Rifle Corps (less 'C' Company, Stranraer, which transferred to the 5th Royal Scots Fusiliers). The battalion was renamed the 5th (Dumfries and Galloway) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers (T.F.) in March 1909 and it was under this title that the battalion offered itself for service overseas on the outbreak of the Great War.

I spoke with a former Royal Marine in his late 60's today originally from Stranraer.
He told me that there was originally rank details and his M.M. listed on the memorial for him, these were later removed, hence it's odd positioning so far to the right.
It was either to keep Shingleston's entry similar to that of the world wars or for another reason...

[edit]
You can just make out the faded marks the removed letters used to have on the memorial in this pic here

Really nice memorial.

WWll casualty on the right side - Robert Henry Paxton (1904-1944). Sgt. (Flight Engineer) R.A.F.V.R. 550 Squadron (Lancasters) - hit by flak (or night fighter) outbound over Liége. At the time he was the oldest airman serving in Bomber Command - well above average age at 39 (and he was married).
Born in George Street, Stranraer, Bobby was a house painter to trade. Glider pilot as a hobby 1930's.

If anyone has local Stranraer info (newspaper clipping or photo scan) I'd be much obliged.
