You will have noticed a new part of the Forum, which has two section - "Project Indexes" and "Memorial Discussions".

We have had indexes for each section already, but these were in the main regional sections and not easy to find. They are now all in the one section, making it easier to view the Indexes for each region.

The Indexes were also cluttered up with discussion of potential memorials not on the project, extracts from old newspapers mentioning possible memorials etc - all this discussion is now separate to the Index in the discussion part.

If you have knowledge of a memorial not on the project, then please use the Memorial Discussions section to list these - preferably in the discussion threads for each region. We will allow new topics to be started in this section but would prefer them kept to a minimum.

We shall shortly be carrying out some updating and improving of the Indexes. This will be part of a general housekeeping drive of the project to make it slightly more fit for purpose.

With that in mind, I would remind members of the forum:

1.One memorial, one thread - if a church has more than one memorial plaque inside, each plaque gets its own separate thread.

2. If you don't have photos, or haven't seen the memorial in place, DO NOT POST A NEW THREAD - this comes under the category of discussion until we have it recorded properly. I am aware there are a number of threads which come into this category - we will be working to move them to the discussion section.

There will be other minor changes in order to make the forum easier to work with and we will let you know of these in due course.

I have noted these recent Rule/Format changes and, in general, I welcome them.
They will however take a bit of getting used to and I don't find that public rebukes of posters who infringe are either helpful or appropriate.
See http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=8236&highlight=edinbane for a recent example.

Personal Messages would seem more polite.

My apologies if this was considered a rebuke, that was not the intention. In future I will send a private message instead.

The general intent of my message still stands though: I would prefer in future that we restrict ourselves to memorials we can document with photographs or other concrete evidence. I personally know of at least 15 or so memorials in Lanarkshire but I have not added them to the forum as I have not visited or photographed them yet.

We need to be going down the lines more of being a database of what we can provw exists, not simply what we've heard about.

As far as I'm aware this is still a discussion forum and as such is "open" for any aspect of War Memorials.
Factually, after "Keptie"'s post, I found the Isle of Skye Pipe Band's Facebook page reporting their attendance at the dedication of Edinbane's New War Memorial on 9 November - and details of those listed are on the Edinbane Community Council's site.
Personally I think that is evidence enough that the memorial "exist".
But I wouldn't have even looked if not for the original posting.
What ever happened to "photo required" threads - or is that another rule change?

I'm with Ken here.

It'll take some time for us all to get used to various 'new' ways, so a little patience required.

Better to have something (even although it might not be in exactly the right place) than nothing.

Like Ken, I did exactly the same as he did and went on to find out all about Edinbane's new memorial .... so thanks Pat!!

coming a little late to this argument, I have been creating a new memorial thread only where it is known to exist (not just suspected) AND there are some facts which need to be recorded such as a transcription or report of the unveiling etc.

for memorials 'believed to exist' then isn't this what the to-do lists such as http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=3965 are for?

Exactly Paul and your link includes a classic example (Belmont School) of how you and John Burnett sorted out a mystery.
Only a "discussion forum" enables this kind of thing.
Whether it is via a "To do list" or "photo required" thread doesn't matter - so long as it is posted it can be followed up.
I have to say that I am horrified that there are "15 or so memorials in Lanarkshire" that are being kept secret.
Is this a kind of train-spotting thing?

I don't see what the issue is here.

With the Edinbane memorial, the discussion would have gone on the discussiom section. From there you would have seen it, found your confirmation details from Facebook as you mention...then the thread proper could have been created.

The Lanarkshire memorials are not being kept secret. Until I have definite confirmation of where they are there's nothing to add here beyond bare bones info which helps nobody. I will add the info I have to the discussion thread where it belongs.

Exactly, although the to do lists will be shortly locked as the information can go in the discission thread.

we're not doing away with discussion, just keeping it separate from the actual data.

That's a good way of describing it David, we will not be stifling any discussion on war memorials, merely trying to get some more structure in place as over the years we have slipped into some bad habits.

Ken makes a point of existing threads which require photos. They will be dealt with as we come across them in the renaming exercise.

The admin / mods are currently agreeing the new standards and once that is complete we will publish them and start work on splitting threads and moving them to the appropriate location.

Sadly that's all too obvious.

"The admin/mods" - who are you talking about?

In any case I would have thought that proposals on new standards would have been put out for consultation and not simply implemented or am I missing the point of establishing a charitable organisation with participation of the members?

The administrators and the moderators of the forum Ken, the same as on any forum the world over, who aren't all the same people as the committee. They have always been here since day 1 of the forum.

New standards on this forum do not have to be a committee matter. The committee can agree to standards being implemtented but the details of those standards are discussed between the administrators.

Thanks

Gosh, now why didn't I work that out?

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear - I was looking for names.

So, in the interests of clarity, what you are saying is that the Adminstrators (You and David?) together with the Moderators (Anne Park, Derek R, Dhubthaigh, Roxy and Spoons) discussed and agreed, for example, the introduction of the Project Index and Discussion threads and that the committee agreed that it should be implemented; and that this process is on-going for other new standards?

Ken

All the mods and the committe were made aware of proposed changes and there was no disagreement with what was discussed.
