ASHCROFT, WILLIAM GILMOUR
Rank: Major
Service No: 93607
Date of Death: 28/06/1944
Age: 38
Regiment/Service: Seaforth Highlanders
7th Bn.
Grave ReferenceVI. D. 9.
Cemetery ST. MANVIEU WAR CEMETERY, CHEUX
Additional Information:
Son of Thomas and Janet Reid Ashcroft; husband of Margaret Spalding Ashcroft, of Elchies, Morayshire. B.Sc. (Glasgow).
A report in the Galloway News on 15 July 1944 reads:
"Major W G Ashcroft, Seaforth Highlanders, head master of Urquhart Public School, has been killed in Normandy. A native of Newton Stewart and a graduate of Glasgow University, he was appointed to Urquhart in 1932, after one year as head master at Clackmarras, Morayshire. He was called up as a Territorial, and leaves a wife and two sons."
Interestingly the Glasgow University RoH has:
"Major William Gilmour Ashcroft was born in Mearns, Renfrewshire in 1904. He graduated Bachelor of Science from the University in 1929."
(scotlandspeople has 1905 - Renfrewshire, but not Mearns)
I don't see him on any Galloway Memorials. _________________ Ken |

I have recently found information suggesting that this memorial is to a design commissioned from Sir Robert Lorimer. The Tennant family were regular clients and the memorial bears a strong Lorimer look. |

Wasn't there something about Tenant on last Sunday's Antiques Roadshow? One of his descendants appeared with the prop of a WW1 plane and of the plane that he died on. |
