When I visited this neat church a week past Friday, the lady who let me in recalled they had a Roll of Honour, but had been unable to find it. She has since had a good search around the whole building but it hasn't turned up, and no-one has managed to trace it.

Usefully its contents were noted a few years ago, when a Fine Arts society surveyed the church contents, so we at least know what was written on it.

That is a bit of luck having the transcription. It's just a shame the roll itself is missing. Perhaps it is out of its frame and stored with paperwork now?

Thanks

Lady who showed me around - and has subsequently gone about trying to find it - is 'Secretary to the Vestry' (or whatever they call it in the Scottish Episcopal Church), similar to Session Clerk, and has been for some time.

I'm guessing she'd be the person to know if it was in with paperwork.

It is fortunate that the transcription exists.

It's the only 'missing' memorial I'm aware of in Berwickshire.

I meant to say before, 20 died out of 68 seems a very high casualty rate. The impact on the community must have been dreadful.

It must have been, yes. Though the church had a 'gathered' congregation of Episcopalians, from across southern Berwickshire, almost all the names are on Coldstream civic memorial, indicating they were local to the town.

I have come across quite a few rolls on my travels and it's interesting when you compare the number of those who served, with the number who died:

50%... Ladykirk... 8 of 16

30%... Coldstream (Episcopal Church)... 20 of 68
29%... Fogo... 11 of 38
27%... Longformacus... 13 of 50
24%... Channelkirk... 7 of 71
23%... Preston (Recreation Hall)... 10 of 44
21%... Hutton... 17 of 81
21%... Polwarth... 8 of 39

20%... Coldingham... 28 of 147
20%... Grantshouse (UF Church)... 7 of 36
18%... Duns (Boston UF Church)... 12 of 68
18%... Eyemouth (Est Church)... 14 of 81
17%... Coldingham (Est Church)... 17 of 105
17%... Westruther
16%... Longformacus (Est Church)... 8 of 50
16%... Reston (UF Church)... 7 of 45
15%... Ayton... 39 of 262
15%... Mertoun... 9 of 63
14%... Eyemouth (Congregational Church)... 11 of 84
13%... Cranshaws (Est Church)... 5 of 39
11%... Burnmouth (UF Church)... 8 of 73

9%... St Abbs (UF Church)... 6 of 68
8%... Earlston (UF Church)... 5 of 68
7%... Swinton (Est Church)... 4 of 62

I should say that the Ladykirk one may not be entirely accurate - since Dr Binnie notes in Churches & Graveyards of Berwickshire that 'there is a very small First World War Roll of Honour with 16 names on it [of whom 8 died], although 52 men and 1 woman served and 12 were lost'. I've got no idea where his figures of 52+1 and 12 come from... and there are only 8 men who died on Ladykirk's civic memorial, all among the 16 on the roll.
