Milngavie - Bearsden & Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire

Milngavie War Memorial stands in the pedestrian precinct not far from the start of the West Highland Way. It features a granite pedestal standing on a low rustic base, surmounted by a bronze figure by sculptor George Henry Paulin.

This is what I recorded and submitted to UKNIWM. I found that cross checking with the names of the fallen either here on or other websites throws up a couple of errors in my original transcription so it is as correct as I can make it.

"Intimation has been received in Milngavie from the War Office that Corporal Duncan McIlwraith, of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, son of the late Mr Robert McIlwraith, joiner, Milngavie, was killed at the front on 13th last. Corporal McIlwraith was several years in the Army, and was called up at the mobilisation of troops in August. He was 23 years of age."

"Mrs McNair, Main Street, Milngavie, has received intimation from the front that her husband, Corporal James McNair, 9th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, was killed while on sentry duty on Wednesday, 7th inst. Corporal McNair, who was only 23 years of age, was a native of Canniesburn, Bearsden, and was the son of Mr William McNair. He left for France towards the middle of February, and for the last month has been engaged near the firing line. During the four days of last week, when the Argylls were under almost continuous fire from the Germans, who were only 50 yards away, their casualties were 10 killed and 36 wounded. Corporal McNair was employed in the warehouse of Messrs Stewart, Moir and Muir, Miller Street, Glasgow. His widow is left with two young children."
