Louise Boreham informed me that according to the Orkney Library and Archives the memorial was by Aberdeen granite firm Messrs. Garden & Co., the memorial being designed by Mr. James Stewart of that firm.

Also according to Geoff Archer's book 'The Glorious Dead - Figurative Sculpture of British First World War Memorials' the sculpture was be the Hereford monumental mason W.G. Storr-Barber. Storr-Barber modelled what appears to be an identical figure, this time cast in bronze, for the Leominster war memorial, just north of Hereford. According to Archer the female allegorical figure at Leominster is holding aloft the torch of Liberty.

Judging by the photographs the memorial appears to be of pink Peterhead granite which marries in well with the red local stone of the cathedral.

Jim

Great information. Looks like we will need to get a close-up of the statue.

Thanks

Note that by 2011 the left hand WW2 names list had a supplementary tablet below to-
AB James Linklater, Merchant Navy AND Sapper Norman Linklater, Royal Engineers

Between 2011 and 2 July 2019 the right hand names list had a supplementary tablet added below to a Northern Ireland casualty-

Lance Corporal Colin Leslie of the Gordon Highlanders

Up to date images are on the WMR report.

Apologies I forgot to look at the statue- I had a frenetic 2 hours in Kirkwall due to severe problems in the tendering operation from the ship I was on, reduced from what should have been a leisurely 7 hours in the town.
