UKNIWM Ref: 44448

Location – outside New Luce church at OS Map Ref: NX 175 645

Apologies for the water on the lens, the weather was atros…. Atrot…. Very bad indeed.

Unusually for a civic memorial in these parts, no KOSB are listed. Just as a confirmation, there are no other inscription panels on the memorial or WW2 names. WW2 names may be in the church but that will have to wait for another day. The McMeekings were brothers.

22 October 2015 Wigtownshire Free Press has reproduced excerpts from the 28 October 1915 edition including a photograph of R McWhirter.

November 10 1915 edition of the Free Press provided more background. "Official intimation has been received by Mr John McWhirter, farmer, Barlure, New Luce, that his son, Private Robert McWhirter, 7th Camerons, was killed in action in Flanders on September 25. Private McWhirter, who was 32 years of age, served his apprenticeship as an ironmonger with Mr JL Davidson, Newton Stewart. After leaving Newton Stewart he entered into the service of Mr Duff, one of the leading ironmongers in Annan, where he remained for nine years before enlistment into the army. He went to Flanders with his regiment in July of this year. Among the many expressions of sympathy sent to his sorrowing parents was one that came from his late employer saying, "He was a faithful servant, upright in all his ways" will not be the least appreciated in their bereavement at this present moment. Mr McWhirter has another son serving somewhere in France at the present time.
