PERTH CASUALTIES

Mr John Sharp, plasterer, 67 Craigie Road, Perth, has received intimation that his elder son, Lance-Corporal John William Sharp, Scottish Horse, has died in King George’s Hospital, London. I searched CWGC but cannot 'see' him.

(Part of) John William Sharp's Pension Record survives on Ancestry. Regimental No. 3222, 1st Scottish Horse.

Extract:

Gradually got worse and was sent to Base details, but again reported sick & was admitted. In the morning on wakening, he is fairly well, but as the day goes on, the muscular weakness becomes marked. ? abdominal absent, others present & normal. Ptosis after staring for a time. ? ? after moving eyes, with diplopia - while reading closes one eye. Grasps - good at first, then weak. Legs - held up then gradually fall to bed. Unable to raise hand except with aid of arm. Not result of but greatly aggravated by conditions of active service. Permanent. Totally prevents at present.

Factors that can worsen myasthenia gravis

Fatigue
Illness

Extreme heat

Is there a case for this lad being submitted to CWGC ?

Mark

Mark - I suspect that this will very much depend on the cause of death as described on the Death Certificate.
As an aside, the NA index shows two Medal Cards, same regiment and service number, one for J W Sharp and one for John W Sharp.

Myasthenia Gravis is not going to have been caused by his service as the report suggests. The double vision & Ptosis in 1913 would be a syptom of it.

You could get hold of his DC at a cost to see what details it contains but, bear in mind, it will not identify him as a Scots DC does.
It may be worth looking at again if there is mention of his service and Myasthenia Gravis is given as the cause of death.

Jim,

If the DC gives his cause of death as myasthenia gravis and, as stated in the pension papers, this was aggravated by war service would this go forward?

I recently read an article which referred to prisoners of war in Singapore during WW2 developing this condition and it was attributed to malnutrition.

It states it was aggravated but not caused by his war service. The remnants of the record also states the ailment originated in 1913 when he was a member of the TF ie. a civilian. For that reason I would expect it to be rejected.

If the DC states myasthenia gravis and there is some detail to link the deceased to 3222 it might pass the first test, but I would not be prepared to guarantee it. That said, without the number, an English DC is unlikely to provide the link to Perth since parents, etc are not recorded.

POW's in the Far East during WW2 may well have developed myasthenia gravis due to malnutrition suffered as " guests " of their captors. The difference in their case would be that the condition began and was caused during their service from February 1942.

Jim,

Yes, I see exactly what you are saying here. I might get the DC out of interest at some point. On the back burner for the moment though. Thanks.

This man first came to my attention in 2010. With some more information and a little perseverance this man will go forward for consideration by the relevant authorities.
