Pte. John Mitchell

(Glasgow Herald 8th June 1915)
"Private Hugh Dodds, attached to the 8th Royal Scots, and son of Mr & Mrs Joseph Dodds, Milton Cottages, Carluke, in a letter to Mr & Mrs Robert Mitchell, whose son was recently killed in action, writes "I am writing to you to let you know how John met his death. He died fighting for his country, and i do not think he could have died a nobler death. We were under very heavy shell fire, and one of the shells landed right on the top of the gun where we were sitting. It was about 5 minutes before we could see anything, and it was a sad sight that afterwards met our eyes. John was lying dead." "

2nd Lieut. A . STEWART, M.C. has an individual memorial in the Isle of Whithorn Church in Wigtownshire.

He enlisted in the RND in December 1915 and was posted to Blandford Camp in Dorset. A year later he applied for a commission and, after attending Officer Training at Fermoy in Co. Cork, he was appointed as a 2nd Lt. in the Northumberland Fusiliers in April 1917.

I have a wee problem with this chap on the Carluke War Memorial, it does appear that he is the brother of John B Dunlop though, but the SNWM and CWGC have different theatres of death, SNWM has him with the same date of death and service number KIA in Salonica, whilst the CWGC has his place of death as France - any ideas??

The 2nd Bn was in Salonika but CWGC says he is buried in France so he will have been 1st Bn. His SNWM entry should say France & Flanders, not Salonika.

That year he was also awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty in the reconnaissance of a farm held by the enemy. The French government presented him with the award of the Croix de Guerre.
