James Neil was born in Kilsyth.
He died on the 15th October 1915 in France and Flanders.
He lived in Glasgow and enlisted in Sterling.
He was a L/Sergeant in Princess Louise’s Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 10th Battalion.
Service number S/1575.
Killed in Action Western European Theatre.
He was also a member of the band.

CWGC: IH 18 Spoilbank Cemetery
Spoilbank Cemetery (also known as Chester Farm Lower Cemetery or Gordon Terrace Cemetery) was begun in February 1915, and used by troops holding this sector until March 1918.
It is particularly associated with the casualties of the 2nd Suffolks on "The Bluff" early in 1916.
It was enlarged after the Armistice when graves were brought in from the battlefields of Ypres.

Peter Semple was born in Kirkintilloch, Dumbartonshire.
He died on the 27th September 1916 in France and Flanders.
He was a private (3/7376) in the Gordon Highlanders, 2nd Battalion.
He died of his wounds.

I D 6 Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension

Son of Peter Semple of Twechar, Glasgow, husband of Mrs P Semple of 10 Edward Street Kilsyth.

For much of the First World War, Abbeville was headquarters of the Commonwealth lines of communication and No.3 BRCS, No.5 and No.2 Stationary Hospitals were stationed there variously from October 1914 to January 1920.
The communal cemetery was used for burials from November 1914 to September 1916, the earliest being made among the French military graves.
The extension was begun in September 1916.

Private William Service was in the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) 227th Coy. Age: 22
He died on the 26th November 1917.
Service No: 103523

Additional Information: Son of Thomas and Isabella Service (nee Shaw)
Isabella died in January 1925 aged 53.
Thomas Service died in February 1944 aged 85.

Alexander Shaw was born in Kilsyth and also lived there.
He died on the 15th April 1918 in France and Flanders.
He enlisted in Glasgow as a private in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, 5th battalion. His service number was S/25226

1901 census: 32 Kingston Road Kilsyth with his parents, Alex and Maggie and younger sister, Maggie. He was 2 in 1901.

Son of Alex and Margaret Shaw, 84 Main Street, Kilsyth.

David Shaw was born and lived in Kilsyth.
He died on the 26th September 1917, aged 34, in France and Flanders.
He enlisted in Kilsyth as a private in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, 1st Battalion.
His service number was 21358.

David Sinclair was born in Kilsyth and lived there.
He died on the 14th September 1914 in France and Flanders.
He enlisted in Hamilton, Lanarkshire as a private in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, 1st Battalion.
His service number was 6497.

Corporal William Sinclair was born in Kilsyth.
He died on the 24th Aug 1916 aged 21.
His service number was 1487 and he was in the 1/7th Battalion of Princess Louise’s Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

He was the son of William and Margaret Lawson Sinclair of 31 Westport Street Kilsyth.

He is buried in 2nd Ext 105 Kilsyth Cemetery.

Corporal William Somerville (303050) died on the 21st March 1918.
He was 20 years old and in the 1st/8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
He was the son of Mrs Elizabeth Nimms of 50 Shuttle St, Kilsyth.

CWGC: He is comererated at VH6 Vandercourt British Cemetery, Maissemy.

John Mackie was born in Kilsyth but enlisted in Cambuslang, Lanark.
He died on the 14th July 1916 in France and Flanders.
He was a private in the 9th Battalion of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles).

He was the son of Archibald and Jeanie Meechan.

He was 36 in 1917 so was born about 1881

David Miller was born in Kilsyth and lived there.
He died on the 29th December 1915 in France and Flanders (in the field).
He was a Lance Corporal in the Corps of Royal Engineers.
His service number was 137661.
178th Tunn Company Royal Engineers.

CWGC: IB 37 Norfolk Cemetery Becordel-Becourt, France
The cemetery was begun by the 1st Norfolks in August 1915 and used by other units (including the 8th Norfolks) until August 1916.
After the Armistice it was nearly doubled in size when graves were brought in from the battlefields near by.

(Glasgow Herald 4th October 1915)
"John Miller, of the 7th K.O.S.B., son of Mr Alexander Miller, Backyards, Kilsyth, has been killed.
He was one of three brothers serving with the forces, another of whom has already been wounded.
Prior to joining the army he was employed as a brusher with Messrs William Baird and Co."

Patrick O’Neil was born in Kilsyth
He died on the 21st June 1916 in France and Flanders.
He enlisted in Kilsyth as a private in Princess Louise’s (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders).

His service number was S/7868
Killed in Action Western European Theatre.

CWGC: Patrick O’Neill was a private aged 26 in the A &SH
Grave mem: O 6 Cambrin Churchyard Extension.

Son of Michael and Mary O’Neill of 31 Kingston Row Kilsyth

At one time, the village of Cambrin housed brigade headquarters but until the end of the First World War, it was only about 800 metres from the front line trenches.
The village contains two cemeteries used for Commonwealth burials; the churchyard extension, taken over from French troops in May 1915, and the Military Cemetery "behind the Mayor's House."
The churchyard extension was used for front line burials until February 1917 when it was closed, but there are three graves of 1918 in the back rows.
The extension is remarkable for the very large numbers of graves grouped by battalion, the most striking being the 79 graves of the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and 15 of the 1st Cameronians (Row C), the 35 of the 2nd Royal Welch Fusiliers and 115 of the 1st Middlesex (Row H), all dating from 25 September 1915, the first day of the Battle of Loos.
