These photos were taken under a heavy snow cloud and light conditions were poor. The image of the second face of the memorial suffers from camera shake and I will see if I can transcribe the names from that. (There are only two inscribed sides.)

At the junction of the A6089. Designed by A. C. Anderson, an octagonal shaft on a square base. A shield incised with a Saltire surmounts it.

The 4 listed all served and died with the 1/4th KOSB at Gallipoli, 2 dying on the infamous 12th July. The four are all recorded as PRIVATE on the SDGW.

Robert Grant is another interesting name as he is also listed on the Liddesdale War Memorial some 4o miles away - another 1/4th casualty of 12th July 1915.

This has evidently been restored/comprehensively cleaned.

I include the WW2 face.

A couple of things here.

Isn't it odd that the last man on the memorial, Wing Commander Thomson doesn't have his branch of service listed, perhaps a confused stone mason took his D.F.C. as an abbreviation for his corps!?
Also what's with the "Trade: Pilot"? Never seen that on CWGC before.
"Roumieu", I wonder how that's pronounced Shocked He went to Cambridge so should have an entry in the University Roll of Honour.

THOMSON, RONALD ROUMIEU
Rank: Wing Commander
Trade: Pilot
Service No: 61512
Date of Death: 19/02/1945
Age: 30
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 114 Sqdn.

Grave Reference: Coll. grave I. C. 3-5.
Cemetery: UDINE WAR CEMETERY
Additional Information: Son of Albert David and Doris Roumieu Thomson; husband of Marion Elizabeth Thomson, of Kelso, Roxburghshire. M.A. (Cantab.).

M.N.B.D.O. stands for Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisation. I can't find out what the L stands for. Note the date of death for Marine Purves which is 1st January 1943 and before the Allies landed in Italy where he is buried.

I wonder if "L" stood for Libya and Marine Purves had been captured at Tobruk?

An alternative is "L" for Landing? The MNDBO seem to have been a multi-unit group of artillery, signals, beach landing specialists etc. They also seem to have a connection to the Commandos.
