Some more photos of the memorial. These shots are also by Derek:

Some detail of the unveiling on the memorial itself:

And the details on each of the sides:

ERECTED BY ALL CLASSES OF THIS BORDERLAND IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF HAWICK AND DISTRICT WHO FELL IN SOUTH AFRICA IN THE GREAT BOER WAR OF 1899-1902 AS A MEMORIAL OF UNDYING REGARD.
YOU DO WELL TO KEEP THEIR MEMORIES GREEN. YOU DO WELL TO CHERISH THE EXAMPLE THEY SET, AND TO OFFER THE ONLY CONSOLATION TO THEIR RELATIVES AND FRIENDS, THAT THEY HAVE NOT GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN VAIN - THAT THE OBJECT FOR WHICH THEY FOUGHT HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED

Here's an old postcard I have of this memorial in my collection. I take it the cannon are no longer there?

The cannons are long gone.
There was also a captured German Field Gun sited near the First World War memorial in Hawick for several years but I suspect that they were all taken away and melted down during the Second World War.

Information on the three officers taken from this website which uses information taken from "The Last Post".

It also uses information from "With The Flag To Pretoria" and "After Pretoria". I have these in my library so I'll see if I can get a better photograph of Colonel Scott Chisholme.

That is a cracking memorial and the unveiling pics are superb.

I was impressed by the level of information on and I really would like to visit that one some time.

Found a reference to Chisholme in "With The Flag to Pretoria". It states that he was "shot three times in quick succession as he reached the top of the ridge"

Colonel Scott Chisholme stopped to bandage a wounded trooper, and was shot in the ankle. He waved his men on, crying out "My boys are doing well! My boys are first!" He was carried to cover by Troopers (Dick) Turpin (who survived the siege of Ladysmith only to be killed later on in the war serving in Marshall's Horse) and C. Lamb, who was severely wounded, losing a leg. However, it was to no avail as he was shot shortly afterwards in the chest, and then in the head, and was killed.

HAWICK NEWS 27th OCTOBER 1899
COL. CHISHOLME OF STIRCHES SHOT –
DURING THE ENGAGEMENT AT ELANDSLAAGTE ON SATURDAY, COLONEL, SCOTT - CHISHOLME, FORMERLY OF STIRCHES, HAWICK, LOST HIS LIFE. THE COLONEL WAS WELL KNOWN AND HIGHLY ESTEEMED IN THE BORDER DISTRICT, AND HIS DEATH HAS CALLED FORTH UNIVERSAL EXPRESSION OF REGRET. DECEASED WHO WAS UNMARRIED, BELONGED TO THE 5th LANCERS. HE SERVED WITH THE 9th LANCERS IN THE AFGHAN WAR OF 1878 - 80, AND AT THE CAPTURE OF ALI MUSJID WAS SEVERELY WOUNDED. HIS DEATH WILL BE A GREAT LOSS TO THE IMPERIAL LIGHT HORSE, AND IS RENDERED ADDITIONALLY SAD BY THE FACT THAT HE HIMSELF RAISED AND ORGANISED THE REGIMENT, COLONEL CHISHOLME WAS SHOT DEAD JUST AS THE IMPERIAL LIGHT HORSE RUSHED WITH THE GORDONS TO CLOSE WITH THE BOERS. UNIVERSAL REGRET IS FELT AT THE LOSS OF THIS GALLANT LEADER OF THE IRREGULAR CORPS, WHICH HAS COVERED ITSELF WITH HONOUR.
ONE REPORT STATES THAT HE "COURTED DISASTER BY WAVING HIS SCARF TO GIVE ENCOURAGEMENT TO HIS MEN. WHO REALLY NEEDED NONE. HE, LIKE OTHERS OF OUR SPLENDIDLY BRAVE FELLOWS WAS KILLED".

HAWICK NEWS 26th OCTOBER 1900
FROM HAWICK ROLL OF HEROES - LOCAL MEN KILLED AT THE FRONT
COLONEL SCOTT CHISHOLME, OF STIRCHES, HAWICK WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO FALL IN THE CAMPAIGN. HE WAS SHOT IN THREE PLACES WHILE LEADING HIS MEN AT THE BATTLE OF ELANDSLAAGTE ON OCTOBER 21st LAST YEAR. IT WAS HE WHO RAISED AND TRAINED THE IMPERIAL LIGHT HORSE, A REGIMENT WITH A RECORD WHICH AS IRREGULARS IS HARDLY TO BE EQUALLED IN THE ANNALS OF THE BRITISH ARMY. THE LATE COLONEL SCOTT CHISHOLME HAD A BRILLIANT MILITARY CAREER IN THE 5TH ROYAL IRISH LANCERS AND OTHER CAVALRY REGIMENTS HE COMMANDED. HE WAS THE LAST OF THE CHISHOLMES OF STIRCHES, HAWICK, AND WAS UNIVERSALLY MOURNED.
