St. Ninian's United Free Church Memorial is now in the Trinity Church, Stranraer (see below)
Photo kindly supplied by Julia C. MacDonald, author of The Faithful, the Fallen and the Forgotten - Sons of the Rhins in the Great War.

There was a bit of doubt about the origins of this memorial but fortunately the "Minister of the Congregation" is named on the memorial - DAVID H. HISLOP - and thanks to research by "Merseman" we now know that David Hall Hislop was the minister (since 1908) at St. Ninian's U F Church when he was "granted leave of absence" in November 1915. He enlisted via the Artists Rifles Officer Training Unit and served as a Lt. in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died in 1939.

I think that this memorial is in what was known as the Town Kirk, but until I'm sure I have not quoted O.S. or Memorial Refs.

This is from the Trinity Church web site:
Trinity Church was created on 27th June 2013 when St Ninian’s Church closed and the congregation united with the Town Kirk of Stranraer. The Town Kirk was itself created by the union of Stranraer Old Parish church and St Andrew’s Parish Church on the closure of the former in 2005. Trinity Church uses the premises of the former St Andrew’s Church of Scotland.

Lt. John Kyle, M.C., R.F.A., Spec. Res.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as forward observation officer. Though wounded early in the day he observed from the front line during a heavy bombardment, which continued throughout the day until the enemy attacked towards evening. The telephone wire was continually cut, and he several times went oub and repaired it under heavy fire. Finding it impossible to maintain the line, he went backwards and forwards to the nearest point of the buried cable, and thereby maintained a valuable supply of information. On each occasion he crossed some 500 yards of open ground under heavy fire. When the observation post was damaged by a shell he continued to observe from a shell hole during the day and the following night. It was due to his splendid courage and resource that group headquarters were kept supplied with valuable information.(M.C. gazetted 1st January, 1917.)

From Mike Morley 19 July 2016

from the Wigtownshire Free Press of 13/7/1916
"Stranraer 'most promising young footballer' Killed" Mr George Fraser, Keys Hotel, Stranraer, has been informed that his son, Private Duncan Moir Fraser, Canadian Highlanders, was killed in action on 2nd inst. Pte Fraser, who was 27 years of age, served his apprenticeship to the ironmongery business with Mr James McHarrie, and was well known in the town and district. He emigrated to Canada about four years ago, and enlisted there last year, being sent over to England to complete his period of training. He had been in France since the beginning of this year. Pte Fraser was one of the most promising young footballers ever seen in Stranraer. For a season he played in one of the teams in the Junior League, as a forward, and good judges predicted a bright future for him on the football field. He also took part in some games for the senior club who were very sorry when he was removed from Stranraer. Of a quiet and retiring disposition, he played the game as it ought to be played, and no one ever heard his voice raised in anger or protest. His death in action adds one more to the long list of Stranraer footballers who have laid down their lives for the country.

A little more on the minister, David Hislop, in the 12/10/1916 edition of the Wigtownshire Free Press: Reverend DH Hislop MA, who has just received a commission in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, has resigned his charge of St Ninian's UF Church, Stranraer. Mr Hislop's decision to resign has caused keen regret among the members of his congregation. He is a son of the late Professor Hislop, of Glasgow UF College, and has two brothers on active service.

Hugh Aitken is included in the Roll of Honour. This from the Wigtownshire Free Press (9/1/1919): Gunner Hugh Aitken, A/102nd Royal Field Artillery, has been awarded the Meritoreous Service Medal. Gunner Aitken is a son of Mr Hugh Aitken, jeweller, Stranraer, and before joining up, assisted his father in the business. [Note: the family jewellery business is still trading in Stranraer]

This is now WMR, ex UKNIWM, memorial 72110

Apologies if I have made any names errors, but it is not the sharpest of photographs especially at the angle it was taken at. But thanks for having a photograph!
