Phee's Australian Service Records - Sorry about that Embarassed
This should work.......
If you go to the National Archives Of Australia at:
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/explore/defence/service-records/army-wwi.aspx
go down to Collections References and click on the link to WW1 service records - in a new window click on "Name Search" and put in name PHEE and then follow the instructions

Better and better Very Happy
With that information, I've managed to get service records on Ancestry for both Clark and Wood, in addition to the Phee brothers' Australian records. The other two Phees don't seem to be relations though.
You're right, Larbert is just up the road from Plean, so that David Thom is a possiblity, but again, how to be sure?
Thanks again,
tanyagar

Fitzpatrick - the 3rd Battalion Scots Guards was a Reserve Battalion, so it could be that your man did not serve overseas and therefore no MIC.

The Phees were brothers. On the 1901 census the family were at Bore Row, Plean. (The Parish was St. Ninians but the Civil Registration District was Bannockburn) They were still in Plean in 1911 - except Henry G.

Henry 39 a Colliery Oversman born Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Janet 38 his wife born Bothwell, Lanarkshire.
Henry G. 13 born Airdrie ( but actually Bothwell in 1888) Janet K. 10 born Airdrie (in 1890) William W. 6 born Plean (1895 Bannockburn) Archibald 3 born Plean and Robert L. 3 months born Plean.
By 1911 there were two more children, Alexander 8 and Nellie 6.

From findmypast - William, Archibald, Robert, Alexander and Nellie (Helen) sailed to Australia in 1912. Also (possibly) their parents Henry and Janet.

That would explain why I can't find the card!
I forgot about censuses! But I did look up the index for the baptismal register. William is recorded as having Walker for a middle name, Archibald Squair b 1897, Robert Forsyth b 1900, Alexander Braid b 1902, Helen Meldrum b 1904. Mother's maiden name Squair, but I don't have the actual entries so can't see if she's Janet...
That means they must have gone to Australia after 1911. Henry might have been married by then too.

Thanks for that Ken! Very probably the parents too, because according to the service records you indicated yesterday, they were both resident in Australia, the mother dying in 1922.

The RMS Orvieto of the Orient Line. Sailed from London on 30 August 1912.
Some details at
http://petermanchester.me.uk/index.php?page=rmsorvieto1
and if you "Google" the name there are a couple of photos on-line.

Thanks Ken. Found a passenger list on Ancestry, also obituaries on TROVE for the parents and Henry's wife (they were married in NSW in 1916) On Ancestry, there was also marriage for HG's daughter Lillias and a picture of WW's memorial panel.
All thanks to you people on this excellent forum. Very Happy

John LOUGH (and John HUTCHISON)

Commonwealth War Graves Commission/Scottish National War Memorial:
Private
No. S/9427
Argyll & Sutherland Hughlanders, 2nd Bn.
Date of Death: 23rd March 1916
Additional information: Born Stirling
Buried: Cambrin Churchyard

Medal Card: John Lough, Private, No. S/9427, 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Killed in action 23rd March 1916

Soldiers Died in the Great War: John Lough, Private, No. S/9427, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, 2nd Bn.
Born Stirling, Resided Cowie, Enlisted Stirling, Killed in action 23rd March 1916

Falkirk Herald, 13th January 1917
Official notification has been received by Mrs. Lough, 40 Normandale, Castlecary, that her brother, Private John Hutchison, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders was killed in action on 14th November last. Twenty years of age, Private Hutchison enlisted in October 1914, prior to which he was in the employment of Plean Colliery Company. About six months ago, Private Lough, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, husband of Mrs. Lough was killed in action.

I think this will be the same John Lough who is listed on the Cowie Civic Memorial, see:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?p=61365#61365

Note that John Lough's name is not in alphabetical sequence, so may have been added at a later date.

I am the grandson of Mrs. Lough, ms Hutchison. Having contacted family members with regard to photographs, none have been found for either John Lough or her brother John Hutchison.
My grandmother was also married to John Wood, brother of William Wood of 79 Red Row,Plean who is commemorated on the Plean memorial. She was a widow when she married my grandfather in 1921 in Cowie. I have not uncovered a death for John Wood, either on Scotlands People or the CWGC sites.
Two husbands lost during the years 1916-1921.
The John Lough on the Cowie memorial would have been the same John Lough on the Plean memorial. The Lough family would probably have requested his name be added on the Plean memorial.

I have now found out that John Wood died at Manor Valley Sanatorium, Manor, Peebleshire on 21 April 1921 from tuberculosis.
