Hello fellow users from (often) sunny Berwickshire.

Delighted to have joined this wonderful resource and collective project.

I have known about the SWMP for some time... and having been browsing the site at some length over the last week or two I've decided to 'take the plunge' and sign-up and hopefully see what I can contribute.

My main interest are memorials in our fine county and elsewhere in south-east Scotland - and I hope to have some photos and information to add in the next few days and weeks; either about memorials already on the site, or adding some which aren't.

However, while I learn the ropes I have some information which might be useful on threads I've noticed in the Queries & Requests section, and also the Lost section - as I have something of an interest in what could best be labelled "ecclesiastical administration" including mergers of congregations and/or denominations, which of course often leads to building closure and in turn 'relocation' of memorials. This includes some info on Kirk Memorial Evangelical Church, Edinburgh; Holburn Parish Church, Glasgow; Ladhope Parish Church, Galashiels which I'll post on the relevant threads.

(Also, if anyone has any particular query about congregation mergers and changes do ask, I've quite a shelf of reference books particulary covering Stirlingshire, the Lothians including the city of Edinburgh and the Borders).

Anyway - hello again, and I very much look forward to contributing.

Kenny

Kenny

Welcome to the group and I look forward to seeing your updates from Berwickshire which is a lovely part of the country and one of my favourites to visit.

Your knowledge of congregations may come in very useful given the situation in Scotland with the renaming of United Free churches in the late 1920s and mergers over the next few years.

Paul "Spoons" Goodwin has just posted about recent church mergers closures. It is something we have discussed on the forum before and it isn't likely to stop any time soon. being able to identify congregation memorials and record them is vital to our project over the next few years.

All the best and thank you for such an enthusiastic start to your membership of our group.

Kind regards

Adam

Welcome, as Adam says I have a particular concern about the memorials of closed or closing churches. We have a lot in Dumfries and Galloway. I am an occasional member of the Scottish Stained Glass Symposium and I know they share my concerns, particularly about stained glass windows of course.

Look forward to seeing your posts.

Many thanks to everyone for the warm welcome.

I have done some desk-based research over the weekend and uncovered most unveiling articles for Berwickshire civic memorials, in The Scotsman.

I have put these on the relevant threads - alongwith their entries from the excellent "Buildings of Scotland: Borders" publication which in some cases details architects and/or builders, and sometimes the date of construction.

But I didn't find unveiling articles for: Ayton, Gavinton (in Langton parish), Ladykirk, Longformacus, Houndwood or Polwarth. So if anyone has details on these that'd fill the gaps. A few already had unveiling articles posted.

I have also confirmed my suspicion the plaque already uploaded, in Ayton Parish Church, originally came from Ayton's UF Church.

Fingers-crossed for weather and I should get some new photos taken too.

After a bit of a lull I've added various Lammermuir memorials:
* Abbey St Bathans (civic)
* Longformacus (civic) - WW1 Roll of Honour
* Cranshaws (church) - WW1 Roll of Honour
* Longformacus (church) - WW1 and WW2 Rolls of Honour
* Lieut Arthur Douglas Ferguson (individual) - Cranshaws + Longformacus churches
