Alexander Sandison
Trooper South African L[ight] H[orse]

Not found in 1911 census.

A possible match in Alexander McHattie Sandison born 22 September 1880 at Barbank, Portsoy.

From information posted on Ancestry he appears to have fought in the Boer War (not confirmed) and remained in South Africa where he died on 20 October 1918 aged 38. Haven't yet determined cause of death or whether it was WW1 related.

This 1891 census applies

Assume this is the same James Morrison as recorded on the Parish of Boyndie War memorial (as posted by Ann Park):

Morrison James L/cpl 971 6th Gordon Highlanders e Portsoy Age 21 Killed in Action F & F 10-Feb-15 Son of Mr & Mrs Alexander Morrison, Whitehills, Banffshire. Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery Fr 0525 Plot I Row C Grave 44 Boyndie & Portsoy

Aberdeen Evening Express Tues 23 February 1915 (with photos):

"Cpl Morrison and Private John McWilliam, of A Coy 6th Gordon Highlanders, who died fighting for King and Country, were both natives of Portsoy"

BJ 9 May 1916
Private James Morrison, B Coy [can't read Bn due to crumpled paper] Gordon Highlanders, native Portsoy, employed for a number of years as a butcher by the late P Cruikshank in Burnside.

Also mentions him as Sgt in Volunteers.

A letter from the Chaplain is also quoted.

William Milne Pte no Portsoy details

Have tried a few approaches but have not managed to map any of the following to Gordon Highlanders:

1. Portsoy births 1880-1900:
October 1893 William John Ga[??] Milne, born at Church Street, son of Agnes Milne (domicil North Street Aberchirder)

1898 William Walker Milne (not viewed as probably too late)

2. 1911 Census 2 William Milnes in Portsoy:

William Milne, aged 29, at Church Street, with wife Jemima (married 1 year), 0 children, general merchant (own account), born Aberdeen.

William G Milne, aged 32, at Cullen Street, with wife Helen (married 8yrs) and 4 children, general labourer, born Sandend.

3. 1901 Census 1 William Milne, aged 21, born Portsoy, farm servant in Fordyce.

4. 1891 Census 1 William Milne aged 12, at No 48 Sandend, born Fordyce, son of Robert and Jessie
