PostPosted: Thu Jul 18, 2013 10:11 pm    Post subject: John or James Leslie Reply with quote

John Leslie on memorial but it looks like he actually enlisted as James ...
Pte 4/8936 2nd Bn Durham Light Infantry

Born Portsoy (from SDGW) abt 1874 (from census and also marriage) (but place of birth Blackhill Durham from SNWM)
Enlisted Edinburgh
KIA 9/08/1915 F&F
Commemorated Panel 36 and 38 Ypres Menin Gate Memorial

Husband of Matilda Leslie, of 38, Bedford St., Edinburgh.

Can't find a John Leslie or a James Leslie born in Banffshire 1880-1900 (ScotlandsPeople) but I have found his marriage to Matilda McKelvie in Edinburgh in 1906. He's a cooper. From the pretty illegible details of parents I have found his mother (much married) and this census for 1881:

Name: John Leslie
Age: 7
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1874
Relationship: Son
Mother's Name: Johana Wilson
Gender: Male
Where born: Portsoy, Banffshire
Registration number: 153/2
Registration District: Portsoy
Civil Parish: Fordyce
Town: Portsoy
County: Banffshire
Address: Old Cullen St
Occupation: Scholar
ED: 2
Household Schedule Number: 62
Line: 12
Roll: cssct1881_45

Also 1891 but not clear about :
Name: John Leslie
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1874
Relationship: Son
Mother's Name: Elizabeth McNaughton

[Elizabeth McNaughton is not his mother, there's a Joan Malcolm in the same house, more likely to be his mother - Malcolm being one of her married names]

Gender: Male
Where born: Portsoy, Banffshire
Registration number: 153/2
Registration District: Portsoy
Civil Parish: Fordyce
Town: Portsoy
County: Banffshire
Address: Old Cullen St
Occupation: Apprentice Cooper
ED: 2
Household Schedule Number: 76
Line: 16
Roll: CSSCT1891_43
