William Gordon Sjt nothing on database

I have a possible update. I've found a William Gordon on CWGC, son of William and Isabella Gordon. There is an inconsistency that he's a Pte. Details are:

Pte 5889 William Gordon, 2nd Bn Gordon Highlanders
Died 29/10/1914 aged 35
Panel 38 Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial
Son of William and Isabella Gordon. About 20 years Service. Served in the South African Campaign, and in India.

In the 1911 English Census I have found a William Gordon, born Portsoy, aged about 31, who is listed as

Name: William Gordon
Age in 1911: 31
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1880
Birth Place: Portsoy, Banff, Scotland
County/Island: Military
Country: England
Military Unit: 2nd Battalion, The Gordon Highlanders
Registration District Number: 641
ED, institution, or vessel: India

I've found a William Gordon in Portsoy in the 1891 census, aged 11, in Old Cullen Street, with his father and siblings (not mother); in the 1881 census he is listed with both parents, resident with grandparents in Old Cullen Street.

A possible match?

From the Banffshire Journal, 28 September 1915

We regret to have to announce the death in London from wounds received at the Dardanelles of Private James Main, New Zealand Rifles, son of Mrs Main, Cullen Street, Portsoy. Private Main, who was 23 years of age, went out to New Zealand about 5 years ago but answered the call of his country and joined the New Zealand contingent with which he came to the Dardanelles where he received serious wounds in the leg and thigh. He was brought to London where everything possible was done for him but he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday. His mother was sent for by the authorities and spent a few days in London with him. Private Main's remains were brought to Portsoy on Saturday and were met and followed home by a large body of friends.

The article goes on to mention 2 brothers who were present at the funeral: Pte David Main, 1/6th Gordon Highlanders, and Pte Alex Main, 2/6th Gordon Highlanders.

A service in the house was conducted by Rev Wm Browne and at the churchyard at Fordyce by Rev Mr Dickson [my note of the last name is not clear].

Andrew Gibson McKerrow

Born Portsoy 02 Oct 1895
Enlisted Keith (under name of Gibson)
Died Loos 25 Septmber 1915 (based on information from Banffshire Reporter)
CWGC/SDGW - found (23/03/15) under Andrew Gibson 11249

Fourth child and second son of Isabella McKenzie - Benzie was her maiden name. In the 1911 census, it implies that he's going under the name of her 2nd husband, one Andrew Gibson McKerrow. Half-brother to my grandmother, Jessie Benzie, who married Joseph Gray in 1910.

1901 Census:
Name: Andrew Benzie
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1896
Relationship: Son
Mother's Name: Isabella Mckenzie
Gender: Male
Where born: Portsoy, Banffshire
Registration number: 153/2
Registration District: Portsoy
Civil Parish: Fordyce
Town: Portsoy
County: Banffshire
Address: Square
Occupation: Scholar
ED: 4
Household Schedule Number: 74
Line: 14
Roll: CSSCT1901_45

From the Banffshire Journal October 26 1915

It is also intimated from the War Office that Private Andrew Gibson McKerrow, 6th Gordon Highlanders, of the Square, Portsoy, has been wounded in action in France. Private McKerrow was a farm servant before enlisting and this is the second time he has been wounded.

From the Banffshire Journal February 6 1917

LOSSES BY DEATH - On Sunday, Rev. Wm. Browne, who has just returned from taking charge of the church at Cadzow, Hamilton, for three months, preached in his own church on the text "We spend our years as a tale that is told" ..... the report continues with ...

Let us mention by name the unreturning brave - those connected with or who have connections in the congregations. Privates Wm. Russell, James Topp, John Pirie, Alex. Murray, Alex. Main, Andrew Gibson McKerrow, Sergeants Alex. Innes and W.S. Moir. To these honoured dead who have died to save us we render our sincerest homage and with grave pride we inscribe their names on our long roll of honour, and underneath we write 'Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends'.

The sermon continued with mention of two other men of Portsoy who had recently died.

UK Register of Soldiers' Effects entry 336641:
Gibson Andrew 6 Gordon Highlanders Pte 11249
Date of death 25/9/15 on or since
2 sums paid to Fa[ther] Andrew G McKerrow on 14/11/16 and 9/9/19

Many thanks to Anne Park for mentioning the Register of Soldiers' Effects - hadn't come across this before now!

Banffshire Reporter Wednesday October 11 1916 contains the news that Mr Gibson of the Square, Portsoy, has received a letter from the Keeper of the Record Office in Perth to the effect since there was no further news of Andrew Gibson, missince since 25 September 1915, the Army Council have regretfully concluded that he was dead on or after that date. The article also notes he was a farm servant before he joined the colours in 1914 and had been in France since March 1915.

BJ 31/10/1916

James Topp, 6th Gordons, son of Mrs & Mrs Alexander Topp, South High Street.

Enlisted September 1914, went to France November 1914 [10/11/14 according to medal card]. Was invalided home for some time; left again for the front April 1915, wounded May 1915.

Had been a mason with Provost Gray.

2nd Lt Batchin wrote to Private Topp's parents that he was killed by a shell that wounded one and killed another.

Pte C Riddoch, Church Street, also wrote to say that Pte Topp was killed on Saturday 21st ... they had been working and were on their way to their billet.

His WW1 Medal Rolls Index card has a transfer date (to MGC?) of 12/9/16
