Just a bit of further info. This memorial was originally topped by a figure of a Scottish soldier standing with rifle reversed, and stood in the middle of the Ladywell Park (at the rear of it's current location).
When the town hall was demolished in the mid '70s the memorial was relocated here, and at some point the highly unpopular statue was replaced by what you can see now.
I think I've got an old photo of the original memorial, I'll have to check.

I know! In fairness though, the original figure was about the size of one of the dummy paras dropped on D-Day, and apparently looked completely incongruous.

This is taken from Pictures from the Past; Stirling's neebour villages by the late Bob McCutcheon, local historian. Unveiled near it's present position on 2/10/1921 by Captain (later Sir) Ian Bolton of West Plean House.
It was moved to the Ladywell park after WW2, when the need to add more names gave the excuse to replace the figure with the current 'needle', then moved to its present site in the '70s'.

Very interesting.
I, personally, don't think the soldier figure is too bad. Although its difficult trying to get a 'true' perspective from photograph.

According to the book it was around 6', so I was well out about the size.
