"Private Walter Blair, 2nd Gordon Highlanders, whose relatives reside at Camp Street, is one of about a dozen of young Motherwell "Gordons" who have been killed at Neuve Chapelle. He was but 19 years of age, and along with hundreds of other Motherwell lads joined the army at the first call for men, and were soon thereafter in the fighting line."

Additional Information:
Son of Samuel and Agnes McRoberts, of Boatgreen, Gatehouse-of-Fleet, Kirkcudbrigthshire.

Born in 1895 in Gatehouse, Bertram was living in Windmill Street, Motherwell, Lanarkshire when he enlisted in September 1914. He served at Ypres, the Somme, Arras, and Passchendaele; and the Somme again in 1918. He was wounded twice in 1915, at Ypres and Messines, and killed at Sailly-le-sec.
Bertram is listed on the Anwoth Parish Church memorial, now in Gatehouse-of-Fleet Parish Church and on the Anwoth and Girthon War Memorial.

(Glasgow Herald 10th April 1915)
"Intimation was received yesterday at Motherwell Police Office that Private George Bain, 1st Scots Guards, was killed in the trenches on March 4. He was one of three Motherwell Policemen who joined the Scots Guards when war broke out. The two others, Constables Alex. Peters and David Woods, are reported missing and probably killed. Bain momentarily exposed his head over the trenches when he was shot by a German sniper. He was 22 years of age, and a native of Elginshire. Peters belonged to Aberdeenshire and Woods to Forfarshire."

"Mr & Mrs Jeffrey, Queen Street, Motherwell, have received an unofficial report from a comrade at the front that their son. Private Robert Jeffrey, 1st Gordon Highlanders, was shot through the head while leaving the trenches. Private Jeffrey had recently returned to the front after recovering from a wound sustained at the Aisne. He was reservist, and served through the South African War. He was a miner and was married."

He was 27 years of age, and had served nine years with the Scottish Borderers, and previous to joining the Army was employed by the Caledonian Railway Company as driver of the parcel delivery van at Moffat. This is the second Moffat man who has been killed in action".
