"William Farrow, of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, has succumbed to wounds received between Ypres and Hazebrouck, and has been buried in Hazebrouck cemetery. Farrow was a Kilsyth miner, and was a reservist. He leaves a widow and four children."

"Private Eugene Docherty, who resided at Low Craigends, Kilsyth, has written home that he is a prisoner of war at Gottingen, Hannover, Germany, having been captured during a bayonet charge by the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders at Ypres. Private William Bowe, of the Argylls, who resided at Charles Street, Kilsyth, is reported missing from October 21, the night of the bayonet charge referred to."

"Notification has been sent to Kilsyth that Private James MacFarlane, 2nd Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, has succumbed to wounds received at the front. Private MacFarlane was 20 year of age and unmarried. He wa sin the Special Reserve, being one of four brothers serving, two others being at the front. The late private was well known in swimming circles, having won a gold medal for diving."

"A telegram received at Kilsyth on Saturday conveyed the information that Private James Gribbon, a local man serving with the Royal Scots, had been accidentally killed that day at Weymouth. Private Gribbon, who was 37 years of age, was the sole support of his widowed mother, with whom he resided at 60 Auchinstarry Rows, Kilsyth, before joining the forces."

"A telegram received at Kilsyth yesterday stated that Private Michael Kelly, 10th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, had died in the Cambridge hospital at Aldershot. He had been in hospital there for about six weeks, and pneumonia supervened. He was a young man of 25 years of age, and was employed as a miner at St. Flannan's Colliery, Kilsyth, up till August. He leaves a widow and three children."

"About the beginning of the year the War Office posted as missing Private Samuel Burns, a Kilsyth man, of the Gordon Highlanders, and no further word has been received from him. A comrade, however, has written that Burns was killed in action, and he assisted at his burial. Private Burns had seen service in the South African War and in India, for which he held two medals. Prior to rejoining the forces he had been employed as a miner at Auchengeich Colliery." Article gets regiment wrong.

He was a young man of 21 years of age, and resided with his widowed mother at 27 Parkburn Road, Kilsyth. He was formerly employed as a miner."

"The fatalities amongst the Kilsyth Territorials have been increased by the news in a letter from Captain Frew that Private John Rankin has been killed in action, being shot through the heart. Private Rankin, who was 21 years of age, was employed as a miner before he left with the Territorials. He was married in August."

(Kirkintilloch Herald 19th May 1915)
"Mrs John Rankin, who resides in Bank Street (Bank Road?), Kirkintilloch, has received word of the death of her husband, Private John Rankin, "D" Company, 7th A.&.S.H. This intimation came from Captain Frew, who wrote Mrs Rankin to the following effect.- "I presume you will have heard ere of the sad death of your husband, Private John Rankin, from a shot through the heart. The battalion was ordered to attack a very difficult German position, and your husband was well forward when he fell shot. If it is any relief to you to know, his death was instantaneous. Your husband was a great favourite with everyone in "D" Company, and on behalf of his comrades and myself, will you please accept our warmest sympathy. He was carefull buried by his comrades, and a wooden cross with his name and regimental number was erected." Private Rankin was a native of Kilsyth."
