What a number of Officers are listed on this memorial.

I take it that it is Harry Lauder's boy, John G.Lauder who is commemorated amongst them?

see http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1820&highlight=lauder

John also posted this information in a seperate thread. I am copying it here so all the information is kept together:

Quote:
Visited June 07. WM is located opposite Police Station, near Royal Bar on the main road.

I have a photo for Derek to scan. It shows the front and the names of the officers.

On one side is the names of the men:

All privaters Alex Duncan Bryden, MGC
Graham Caskey, A and S
Thomas R McL MCBride, HLI
John McConnell, A and S
Richard G and Edward M McIntyre, HLI
Hector Mcellar, A & S
James S McLean, Rhodesians
Geaorge Michael and Alexander Michael John, A & S
George Moore, Wiltshires
Robert M Stephen, AEF (Australians?)

Other side are the NCOs:

CSM Andrew Still, Cameron Highlanders
Sgt Hugh Currie, A & S
Sgt Charles Haughery, HLI
Cpl George Bryson, MGC
James c Finlay, SR
Peter McM McCormick (regt not recorded by me)
Albert J Smith, Warwickshires
L Bdier James Andreson (sic), RGA
L/Cpl William Begbie and John Caskie, A & S
Sapper David Cauldwell, RE
Archibald d Thompson,- rank and regt not recorded by me.

The WW2 names are also shown in the church at Inverchaolain, 12v miles round the coast rd. See separate post. My old OS map shows it as it's own parish with Inellan in Dunoon and Kilmun parish.

As you can see John didn't manage to get all the ranks and regiments transcribed so if anyone can provide photographs of the missing panels it would be appreciated.

Adam

The three Woodside brothers.
It is odd the address is different for each son and that the father is described as deceased in an earlier sons death but not a later one?
I think Colehawke should read Colebrook.

I wonder what Victoria Cross holder Capt. Paton's link is to the area? He is also on the Dunoon memorial.

PATON, GEORGE HENRY TATHAM
Rank: Captain
Date of Death: 01/12/1917
Age: 22
Regiment/Service: Grenadier Guards 4th Bn.
Awards: V C, M C
Grave Reference: II. E. 24.
Cemetery: METZ-EN-COUTURE COMMUNAL CEMETERY BRITISH EXTENSION
Additional Information: Son of George William and Etta Tatham Paton, of Wolviston House, Whyteleafe, Surrey.

Citation:
An extract from the "London Gazette,'' dated 12th Feb., 1918, records the following:-" For most conspicuous bravery and self-sacrifice. When a unit on his left was driven back, thus leaving, his flank in the air and his company practically surrounded, he fearlessly exposed himself to re-adjust the line, walking up and down within fifty yards of the enemy under a withering fire. He personally removed several wounded men, and was the last to leave the village. Later, he again re-adjusted the line, exposing himself regardless of all danger the whole time, and when the enemy four times counter-attacked he sprang each time upon the parapet, deliberately risking his life, and being eventually mortally wounded, in order to stimulate his command. After the enemy had broken through on his left, he again mounted the parapet, and with a few men, who were inspired by his great example, forced them once more to withdraw, thereby undoubtedly saving the left flank."

Not listed here but at least he made it to SNWM which is more than can be said of Matthew Tarbet who perished in the same incident. Page 1 of the thread and some way down:-

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic3325.html

Unable to find John Reid at CWGC.

SNWM - WW1
Surname REID
Forename John
Rank Chef
Service number
Decoration
Place of birth Innellan
Date of death 30 October 1914
Theatre of death 'ROHILLA' (His Majesty's Hospital Ship Rohilla.)
Cause of death Unknown
SNWM roll THE MERCANTILE MARINE
Unit name Unknown Unit attached to THE MERCANTILE MARINE

See the Matthew Tarbet entry for further information links.
.............................................

Another casualty of the same incident not listed SNWM or anywhere that I can see on CWGC and not on the Glasgow Roll of Honour. Just putting him here by way of a reference marker.
The Glasgow Herald, Wednesday, 4th. November, 1914.
"Deaths.
REID.-
Drowned in the wreck of hospital ship Rohilla at Whitby, 31st. ult., Archibald Reid, aged 39 years (think that is the number), second son of Mrs Reid, 97 Grove Street."

Reported in the Herald at the time that the Admiralty would provide coffins but that was all.
