Sad to see it in such poor condition. There's clearly several names been lost from it.

From the 13th of November 1936 Scotsman, it is stated the factory was to close. They were sanitary engineers, nothing to do with plates and bowls.

Thanks to David Weir, the Heritage Officer at Paisley Central Library who looked through the Paisley WW1 Roll of Honour and came up with a list of names from "Paisley's Fallen" with a Doulton's connection. This helps identify the men listed and some of those missing.

It doesn't list two of the names visible on the memorial so there is no guarantee these are the missing names from the memorial but it is a huge step forwards towards identifying all the Doulton's men lost in the First World War so a big thank you to David Weir and his team at paisley Library for their help.

Coy Sergeant Major Hunter, John B (36) parents, 18a Seedhill Road, former employee Doulton’s - 17 years Army, came from India, served Egypt and Gallipoli – killed France, May 16, 1918.

McKay, Hugh (35) wife and 3 children. 21 Great Hamilton St., craneman, Doulton – joined R.S. F., Sept 1914 – killed July 10, 1917.

Scotsman, 26th October 1915:

"Daniel Barr, 8th Gordon, whose mother lives at 2 M ill Place, Camphill, was killed on 13th October by a shell which burst in the trenches. He was 18 years of age, and before enlisting was an apprentice moulder with Doulton & Co, Paisley."

William Bauchop enlisted at the age of 51 in the Corps of the School of Musketry in September 1914. He was discharged due to ill health, unfit for future service in December 1915.

He had previously served from 1884 to 1910, with no overseas service, in the Scottish Rifles, and gave his occupation as patternmaker.

His papers (held on Ancestry) clearly state his illness was not caused by military service, so there is no case for putting this forward as a non-comm.

There are three W Baxters listed in the Royal Engineers on the CWGC. One is a man from England, so probably not him. These are the other two:

Neither are listed on the SNWM. It's possible this man is another, like Bauchop, who was discharged and died later. I'll need to do some further research to be sure.

John Campbell

We have a note his mother lived at 4 Barclay Street, and that he was a craneman at Doulton's. "Paisley's Fallen in the War" lists that he joined the Argylls in January 1915 and was killed February 28th, 1916.
