David and I are both concerned with the state of this memorial which John posted a photograph recently

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=7748

It is the Doulton & Co one in Hawkhead Cemetery in Paisley. David has found out this was from an old Royal Doulton factory so I take it the memorial is made from ceramic tiles which were made in-house by Doulton

Like Mains in Dundee can we maybe try and do something about getting this one repaired, replaced, moved or whatever it will take to make it right?

Can we start by trying to identify some of the names and when the memorial was originally unveiled?

I've tracked down two names which match the details on the tiles but no guarantee they are the same people. There are also another two possibles. The others have not enough detail to be sure

CALDWELL, DAVID
Age: 21
19/05/1917
Private
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 1st/6th Bn.
France
251416
DUISANS BRITISH CEMETERY, ETRUN III. N. 10.
SON OF DAVID AND AGNES CALDWELL, OF 43, NEILSON RD., PAISLEY

GALBRAITH, DUNCAN
Age: 23
26/09/1915
Private
Royal Scots Fusiliers "C" Coy. 7th Bn.
France
13381
LOOS MEMORIAL Panel 46 to 49.
SON OF PETER AND AGNES GALBRAITH, OF 45, GREAT HAMILTON ST., PAISLEY

This one is a battalion out but could be the right man?

CAMPBELL, J
Age: 19
01/09/1918
Private Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 10th Bn.
France
327327
ROYE NEW BRITISH CEMETERY IV. E. 2.
SON OF ARCHIBALD AND ANNIE CAMPBELL, OF 23, BLYTHSWOOD DRIVE, PAISLEY

This one is the right regiment but no other detail

EWING, J
31/07/1916
Private
Highland Light Infantry
United Kingdom
23091
PAISLEY (HAWKHEAD) CEMETERY A. 1017.
SON OF JOHN EWING, OF 3, KERR ST., PAISLEY

Which still leaves us with these names

D. Adams 1/6th A. & S.H.
R. Adamson 1st Batt. Scots Guards
W. Baillie 6th Cameron Highlanders
D. Barr 8th Gordon Highlanders
W. Bauchop School of Musketry

And it looks like the next name on the list, the first name missing is G Hunter, 1st Scots Guards

Thanks to Delboy for this, it is from the Barrhead thread:

(Glasgow Herald 7th May 1915)
"Killed in action in France, on Tuesday the 4th inst, George Hunter, of 1st Battalion Scots Guards, aged 28 years, elder son of George and Catherine Hunter, of Knowes Cottages, Glenfield, Paisley, and husband of Maggie Winning, 8 Lintmill Terrace, Neilston."

"Official notice has been received of the death in action on Tuesday, 4th inst., of Private George Hunter, of the 1st Scots Guards. Private Hunter, who was 28 years of age and married, joined the Army in September last, and has been in France for the last two months. He served his time as a brassfinisher in Barrhead, and was employed with Messrs Doulton, Paisley, when he enlisted."

Once we have some more information on this memorial and the missing names, I will be contacting the local media in my capacity as chairman of the Scottish Military Research Group. I think this needs to be highlighted, as this condition is frankly deplorable.

Scotsman, 26th October 1915:

"Daniel Barr, 8th Gordon, whose mother lives at 2 M ill Place, Camphill, was killed on 13th October by a shell which burst in the trenches. He was 18 years of age, and before enlisting was an apprentice moulder with Doulton & Co, Paisley."

One of the potentially missing names. From the Scotsman, date 23rd November 1915.

"Joseph Robb, 8th Gordons, whose wife lives at 4 Wallneuk, was killed in France on September 25. Pte. Robb, who was 27 years of age, was employed with Doulton & Co, prior to enlisting in September last year. He leaves a widow and two children."

CWGC has this match, with a different battalion:

ROBB, JOSEPH

Rank: Private
Service No: S/6152
Date of Death: 25/09/1915
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
9th Bn.
Panel Reference: Panel 115 to 119.
Memorial: LOOS MEMORIAL

William Bauchop enlisted at the age of 51 in the Corps of the School of Musketry in September 1914. He was discharged due to ill health, unfit for future service in December 1915.

He had previously served from 1884 to 1910, with no overseas service, in the Scottish Rifles, and gave his occupation as patternmaker.

His papers (held on Ancestry) clearly state his illness was not caused by military service, so there is no case for putting this forward as a non-comm.
