Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church, High Street, Paisley PA1 2BA

OS Grid Ref: - NS 478639

Built as a memorial to Thomas Coats of the Paisley thread family, the beauty of the building speaks its own silent message. Cathedral-like with a crown steeple and given extra prominence by a wide and high flight of steps to the main door. Designed by Hippolyte Blanc (Scottish despite his French name) in Gothic style, cruciform in shape and with flying buttresses along the nave. Opened in May 1894, the church can seat 1,000 people. Beautiful interior, by far the grandest of the Paisley churches with its vaulted roof, mosaics, stencilled decoration, carved marble and alabaster. The attention to detail throughout the building is astonishing and the quality of craftsmanship astounding. Famous Hill 4-manual pipe organ with 3,040 pipes.
