The DOUGLAS J. A&SH. listed here also appears on the Maxwelltown/ Troqueer Memorial and on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

L/Cpl. (S/3131) James Douglas, 11th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was killed on 9 April 1917 and is buried in Ste. Catherine British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
He was born on 14 June 1891 in Hawick where his father, James, was a frame-work knitter; his mother was Jane (Black) Douglas and latterly they lived at Ivy Bank, Mill Rd. Maxwelltown. James was working as a groom in Annan when he enlisted.

"Intimation has been received at Annan of the death from wounds in Greenwich hospital of Private William Walker, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Private Walker, who was 20 years of age, joined the Army three years ago, and was with the first Expeditionary Force. He was wounded at La Bassee in November, but recovered and rejoined his regiment in France at the beginning of the year."

I knowwhat you mean Ken, sadly it's the same for many towns and villages across the country.
The one thing that always hits me with old postcards of high streets is the awnings that were once so common are so rare now. Maybe lorries rip them down?!

Son of Alexander and Helen Beattie Macdougall, of 10, Bank St., Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Born at Kelso, Scotland.

Lieutenant David Graham Mather MacDougall, The Kings Own Scottish Borderers, attd 1/3rd Btn The Kings African Rifles.
Born Kelso 11th September 1891. Son of Alexander and Helen Beattie Macdougall, of 10, Bank St., Annan, Dumfriesshire. He was educated in Kelso and at the Annan Academy. He served his apprenticeship in the Annan Branch of the Bank Of Scotland, passed the Associates Examination of the Bankers Institute, and obtained a situation in the Royal Bank of Canada in 1912.
He returned to England to take up Woolen Spinning in Hawick, but on the outbreak of war obtained a commission.
Served with the Expeditionary Force in German East Africa, and was Killed In Action at Ngangachi, near Kilwa on the 27th July 1917, and is buried in the Dar El Salaam War Cemetery.

His Colonel wrote 'I regret to have to inform you that your son was killed in action on the 27th of this month, gallantly leading his men against the enemy... I saw him shortly after he had been shot, but he had succumbed to his wounds, so I think his death must have been instantaneous. On behalf of myself and the officers of the 1/3rd battn, The Kings African Rifles, I would take this opportunity of expressing our deep sympathy with you in your very great loss. Although your son had only been with us such a very short time he took a keen interest in his work, and by his death I am sure the Kings African Rifles have lost a very valuable and gallant officer'

Also commemorated on the Hawick Roll of Honour but not in Kelso.
