A James Woodhall Forrest, timber merchant's assistant, age 19 died that day of a GSW to the head. He was found dead at a Glasgow school. It appears the injury was self inflicted with no suggestion that he was a Cameronian or an Officer.

I tried an online search of the Glasgow Herald relating to the death of James W. Forrest without success.

I think this may be him, listed with family, in the 1901 census;

James' father obituary

Maternal grandfather;

SIR THOMAS MASON

SON of John Mason, builder, and born at Airdrie in 1844, the late Lord Dean of Guild was educated at Anderson's Academy in Glasgow. In his seventeenth year he was a journeyman mason, and he was engaged in railway construction, latterly as manager, for 13 years. In 1876, along with Mr. John Morrison, he established the firm of Morrison & Mason. Among their works are the Glasgow City Chambers, the Clyde Trust Offices, the new Glasgow Bridge, Carlisle and Paisley Station, the Coats Memorial Church, Paisley, and the John Clark U.F. Church, Largs. They constructed the Canal Line, the Cathcart Railway, Craigmaddie Reservoir and Tunnels, and they raised Thirlmere Lake and made 26 miles of the Manchester Aqueduct.

Among the offices Sir Thomas has held are those of Sub-Dean of Guild, Clyde Trustee, Director of the Merchants' House, Town Councillor, and Deacon-Convener of the Trades' House. He is a Justice of the Peace and Deputy-Lieutenant of the County of the City of Glasgow. His amusements are music and curling, and he has travelled on the Continent and in Egypt and America. He is a Liberal in politics and received the honour of Knighthood in June, 1909.

His name is mentioned in this web site;

London Gazette, 9 December 1913, p9086-7 (LINK):

5th Battalion, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles); James Woodhall Forrest (late Cadet Lance-Corporal, Fettes College Contingent, Junior Division, Officers Training Corps) to be Second Lieutenant. Dated 12th November, 1913.

A check of the Officers List should confirm status at outbreak of war.

Mark

He was found dead at Woodside Public School and his UR is given as 34 Kingsborough Gardens on the registration. There is nothing to link him to the military.
If he was embodied at his death he would qualify for CWGC as a war death, if it can be proved.

He is also named on Kelvinside Academy and Royal Troon Golf Club War Memorials and on Fettes College Roll of Honour.

There is an entry for him in the Register of Soldiers' Effects, annotated to say, "No C of A held. Pay due stated to have been handed over to deed's fa. No debts, no claims".

Kirkintilloch Gazette Friday 14 August 1914.

We regret to hear of the death of James Woodhall Forrest on Tuesday last. Deceased was with his regiment 5th Scottish Rifles and in cleaning a rifle it is stated to have exploded with disastrous result. Lieut. Forrest was only 19 years of age and well known in Bishopbriggs.
